The Hero questline is largely reactive, he is pursuing a macguffin and/or chasing a villain to stop them.
The Villain questline is largely active, the villain is the agent of his own story, setting long-term goals and planning a lot of things to make sure everything goes his way.

It is easy to write a linear plot when everything is laid out for you and all you need to do is show up. "Villainous" acts in video games are limited by the script, most bad guy acts are short-term events of the protagonist being a strangely selective killer, an in-the-moment swindler, or just an asshole. With few opportunities to set things up for long-term gain, all of those things naturally result in lost opportunities and limited rewards.

Because villains kill, take, destroy and corrupt everything that pre-exists. Never adding anything but dead bodies or rape victims to satisfy themselves in the short term. They use to be pretty balanced before they were able to data mine choices. many RPGs from the late 90s and early 00s did a lot of work to have both be about the same, however after online became a thing and you could see that 90% of players chose the good choices it made programing anything for the evil choices very dubious, this came to a head with Dragon Age 2 where the whole game top down was designed based on what 90%+ players did in DA:O but it blew up in their face because it turns out you need to give those players the choice they would never want just to make them think their hive mind npc brains had a choice at all.

Because a Villain questline in 99% of games is just the Hero's questline, but sometimes you stab someone's dog or grab the evil sword instead of leaving it there. There's no room for substance or content because the linear narrative specifically requires you do things in order to reach the pre-determined later levels, and they rarely write the original non-villainous story in such a way where a villainous approach will lead you to the same narrow spaces that get you to "the end".

In the games where you actually have a full story and narrative behind the evil route, there's a chance for everything to be completely different, full of more engaging content, a rich narrative, different playable characters, access to different tools, etc., but these routes 99% of the time also require a measure of context as to why you'd be evil in a world where your general pull is towards heroism. This then usually means they need to feed you a full narrative before you can consider why being evil would make sense, which then generally means you're not going to even know why you'd be evil or feel the impact of being evil until a full non-evil playthrough, which then means being evil is purely supplemental content, rather than primary content. That, or you make the game with the evil route as the intended playthrough, in which case it's a game where you're supposed to be evil in the first place, with the "good" run just being the introductory content to kick things off. You can't have perfect balance without sacrificing some element of design, so one of them tends to usually be lopsided as a result.

I always have such a hard time roleplaying villains.
Most people I see do it, just treat it like one big joke, like "Heh, let me pick the most evil option because It's funny to be edgy! Lol!"

But I like my characters to have some rhyme or reason for what they're doing.
Not in a "I'm sympathetic because I'm so traumatized so I do evil" kind of way, but in a "I genuinely have a distorted view of the world and behave this way because I think I'm right."

But most times I just can't get into a headspace that allows me to flesh that kind of character out without feeling "this is a bit of a convoluted reason to be evil".

I'm not asking this as a newfag, I'm asking this as someone who has been here for over a decade, partook in the culture and usual shitpost flinging and shitting on others, but every since I became properly Christian, there's something that just changed about my entire feeling of this place. I barely ever post here like once or twice a month instead of daily, if something comes up like a new game release and that's about it, and every time I open it up, there's just something stirring in me that makes me feel disgusted and unfitting to be on here anymore. I started noticing the huge amount of conversations where people do nothing but just insult and curse at each other with no point for anything more and more and it all just feels so absolutely vile and disgusting, I just can't explain it but it feels like whenever I open this thing up again, I'm entering Sodom and Gomorrah, and anytime I don't conform to the usual shitposty personality that's been made up around this place, I just immediately get pointed at and shat on an either immediately called underaged or a newfag or whatever other type of slur possible depending on the context of my post.

This whole thing was something I had awareness of before this as well, but generally just ignored or tried not to pay much attention to it, but now it's just this feeling of filth that I keep getting myself in whenever I come visit again, which I shouldn't be in anymore or engage with.
