No JRPG has genuinely good gameplay. None.
Any JRPG being good is entirely subjective to how much you like the world and characters. Even if one is lofted for having a good story, it's not worth trudging through dozens of dozens of repetitive mindless content so you have to really like the characters, music, aesthetics, etc otherwise you're not gonna have fun.

All of those mechanics are superficial and actually take away from the already boring gameplay. Putting a rhythm game in a jrpg does not = real gameplay, not does it make it more fun because at the end of the day the actual gameplay is the same. The rhythm aspect doesn't magically make your commands more interesting or defense have more depth

What. Tales are popular by people that play 'em multiplayer with friends sure but plenty of people, the vast majority in fact, play them solo as 99% of other JRPGs. It's like saying you can't play Symphonia or Vesperia or Graces without friends.

>Freeform, meaningful character customization, also a shitload of customization
>Enormous casts of recruitable characters with their own specific niches and quirks
>Nonlinear progression with next to no barriers whatsoever
>Every battle feels rewarding due to the granular growtystem
>Every game tries something different, whether it is alternate combat systems or different game frameworks entirely, one game might play like an average console RPG, another one is designed like a virtual tabletop
>Satisfying core mechanics that are also original and ahead of their time, each game manages to not just try something new but also build on the series' legacy and fix or polish what other games didn't get right
>Lots of interesting choices at all levels of gameplay, from character builds to questlines or general progression
>Excellent enemy design on average
>Enormous replay value due to the games being designed with roleplay in mind, having multiple main characters with their own stories and having campaigns designed in a way so the world feels like a giant puzzle for you to figure out
>Game mechanics that are actually intertwined with game narrative, Red's story being a popular example
>Some games feature very interesting racial mechanics, with each race being actually radically different instead of being humans wearing fursuits, green paint or pointy ears

You're practically in diapers. Your brain is tricked into believing the game is more adult than other JRPGs literally just because it uses a realistic style. If E33 had an anime style literally no one would think it's story is any more "mature" than most other JRPGs.

Play anything by Masato Kato or Yasumi Matsuno if you want that โ€œadultโ€ feel without the waifu crap. Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre โ€” all heavy on politics, war, betrayal, and donโ€™t babysit the player with spiky-haired teens screaming about friendship. Also worth checking out is Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne if you can handle the minimal handholding and oppressive atmosphere. All of them actually feel written by someone over the age of 16.
