I mean, you're well into the first generation of 3D consoles, they're about to hit their stride with the next generation coming out, and at the same time you got emulators letting you dip into the entire library of 2D console games. For the moment it seemed like things were bright in all directions.

The 90s were a clusterfuck for video games. Early 2000s were better, devs got their shit together when it comes to 3D and knew what they were doing, computing power was good enough for every genre and every graphical style (no more wonky looking characters in realistic games), PC was in its golden age, modern conveniences like MP3s, Divx, USB were there. The internet was peak as broadband became the norm but with none of the cancer we have today. Handheld gaming was at its peak too, the DS was amazing and a cfw PSP made you feel like the future is now.

I doubt reddit has any actual cultural impact on anything.
I'll probably go with facebook; maybe it not existing could have prevented this pseudo-monopolization of social media that led to the hellscape we know today, though it would have certainly arrived; it's not like there weren't any alternatives.

Reddit has a hand in homogenizing and making nerd culture mainstream. Reddit approves of and encourages bad decisions from creators and media. Another one is reddit essentially helped kill forums. Now instead of talking there, devs or voice-actors just go to reddit and need to feel validated 24/7 by unpaid mods and updoot farmers.

Why would you give a fuck about shows airing before you were born when you can just watch the whole thing at any time?
Only part I can really sympathize with is arcades dying because that one isn't as easily replicable.
The rest is just odd whining about stuff that is still very much still around for you to enjoy if you want.

yeah, this was when street fighter 2 was THE PvP game you played. Where if you played dishonerably and cheap you would get thrown to the back alley of the arcade and get stabbed. Where real men fought Video games were made by men who wanted to make something fun and push their artistic minds to the limit boundires of the technology was given to them at the time. Just look at this pic and you will notice there's not a woman or a tranny in sight. This was a time before video games were not used to force a political agenda rather than to show a creative vision of what this virtual world can give you. Video games will never be as good as it was and it all went downhill once the 2010s started

When people who have only played fighting games over an internet connection start weighing in on FGs I just shake my head. They are engaged in a perverse imitation of the real thing. You can't psyche someone out 300 miles away. You can't feel the intensity in the arcade as the 8+ people watching cheer and boo.

SF2 didn't release with the expectation to be a global phenomenon either. SF1 was trash. Fighting games weren't really a thing in '91, beat'em ups were. Someone in Japan had a good idea and they followed through with it because they were passionate about it. They made it work in spite of previously held notions that it couldn't.

The various identities (goth, prep, jock, gangsta, nerd etc) weren't deconstructed by social media yet. Everyone was free to be whoever they wanted to be without fear of becoming a meme or getting ostracized. Then social media happened and a person who previously had 9 different identities was forced to shoehorn them all into one safe forward facing identity that pleases eveeyone. Facebook turned people into corporations.

One of the most underrated but kino aspects of the 90s was that because the internet was so primative, and we didn't have online communities and discords and streamers
you just... fucking played games. No one looked up the top meta builds or saw what some shithole streamer was doing. Or look up a guide online to see how to get past a certain puzzle or gimmick. You just explored and played even if it meant playing suboptimally.

This whole concept is completely lost and wasted on modern games. Where everything about the game is completely datamined and solved before the game is even released, from betas. And if its not its instantly figured out and spreads like wildfire over discords and video platforms in the first week.

the difference also being that back then if a game had a bug or glitch or the balancing on a weapon or attack was too op or shitty, we just accepted it and went on with our lives and still enjoyed the game.
nowadays you nigger faggots cry and piss and shit your skirts about balancing and the games performance no matter whats done.

Not really. People shat on games back then to the point where most old games had 2-4 revisions. And that includes "perfect" games like SMB3.
Also, quite often the last released version in a specific region (like US or EU) got much better version, usually more sprite animation, major bug fixes, new content etc. so usually jap versions were always the worst and most buggy.

The SNES through the PS2 was peak. Gaming more or less died with the release of the 360. That gen killed them, from the waggling on Nintendo, to the paid online on Xbox, to the no gaems on PS3. The brown and bloom shooters ran out all the other games.

Yes and no.
Most of us fags were children the so let me explain, if you think current gpu shit is expensive the 90's would fuck you up.
>wow leap from nes to snes to n64 in such a small time frame. Imagine needing to buy new hardware every 3 years, with zero back compat.
>but muh pc
Even fucking worse, a pc build cost thousands of dollars in the 90's, maybe 5k+ with todays money and you ran shit at 480p sometimes 60. You needed to buy an entire new build each time because shit was leaping huge jumps. your top of the line pc couldnt even boot shit up 2 to 3 years in.
It was cool in hindsight because must of us had friends back in the day, so timmy had a nes, peter had a snes, John had a n64 and the guy with only you as his friend had a pc.

It just feels like there's no whimsy anymore. Like everything has to take itself seriously and be taken seriously now. You can't just try something new or off the beaten path because you have to appease investors or else you just die as a business, and since the people making games aren't people who play video games anymore, all they care about are those business numbers. Everything is about money now, everything is boring to look at now. At some point, people became obsessed with minimalism and I honestly fucking hate it. I think about all the crazy ass furniture my grandma had and all the knickknacks and assorted memorabilia on the walls, and I loved that shit in retrospect. It had personality. It seemed a little chaotic when I was little, but now that I'm well into adulthood, I appreciate it for what it is. You can see a life lived in that house. Like people were there. You just don't get that shit from young couples moving into old homes and converting everything to fucking bare ass walled open concept nightmare zones. Fuck all that dude.

gaming was a subculture back then, so everyone involved with it really liked it and that's how we got games that were really cool and good because everyone involved with it including the ceos were all gamers. gaming became mainstream so now, like you said, the people making games don't even play them. the gamers got pushed out of the industry as well by the push towards mass appeal and hiring practices that no longer favor white and asian men.

the sub culture is dead as fuck, replaced with this weird consumer culture based around things like funko pops. this same thing happened with anime, akihabara became a tourist hotspot and is no longer a subculture hub. the otaku hub was taken away from otaku, just like vidya has been taken away from gamers so that normalfags can come visit and get some surface level stuff.

i mean fuck, dungeons and dragons and magic the gathering were ruined too, nerd sub culture got fucking decimated by corporate greed. star wars is another one and apparently fucking warhammer 40k is going through the same thing.

GTA
GAYLO
Fable
Civ 3 and 4
Sim city 4

Strategy games were still popular
9999 type of tycoon games
No mtx, dlc or intentionally cut content
Expansion packs actually expanded the game
All of these series got a new game yearly and changes were usually major

I'd say 2012 was the last good year. Obama's first term was much more optimistic than his second, with lots of major events such as the killing of bin Laden, the Arab Spring, and Occupy Wall Street which gave the feeling that things were getting better. It was also the last time less than half the population had iPhones.

2004. Since that moment everything had started to slowly get worse starting with "movie games". 2007 is the next moment, when it had started to get worse faster - PS3 release, console-oriented graphics, console-oriented controls. Next is 2011-2012. Since that moment the amount of good new games per year had drastically fallen. Also the beginning of massive sjw rise. Just to think - the idea about helping people had been turned into dei hires, faggotry propaganda and intentional uglyness everywhere.

"Retarded culture war" is what had happened when CEOs had decided to go for wider audience even further - through catering to the loud minority of sjw, who had decided to use this opportunity to shit as much of their insanity, toxicity and hatred on everybody else. So, unfortunately, everything about ugly faces, faggotry, modern "writing" with dialogues without even a small thought, that language, phrases, vocabulary, tone should fit the setting etc in modern games is either that "retarded culture war" or its direct consequences. Not without attempts to gain financially through hiring cheapest replaceable workers while "cancelling" pros.

The 90's had more offerings and creativity because things were running wild and fast. But that was before control schemes were locked in so things got fucked up a lot of the time. It was a glorious period but the early 2000's were probably the best because they ironed out all the kinks.

Everything after is just derivative bullshit now. Remakes, reboots, etc.

zoomzoom thinks voice comms was a thing that early on
it bewilders me how literally nobody types anymore in any genre of games, its always "mic or kick" as if i want to hear some autistic thirdie give out orders with a fucked up accent
relaying information in a chatbox is simple but ive witnessed nu-devs making chatboxes basically unreadable because nobody can make good UI anymore

95-05 was pure kino in terms of everything, tech was constantly improving with big leaps, games were kino, magazines were kino, fashion was kino, music was kino, internet was at an actual peak in terms of online communication/amount of retards & turd worlders
i remember a girl sending me a nude via email or maybe even mms back then and shit was perfectly low quality to the point you see enough and have enough left for your imagination to fill in

Are the 2010s the first decade to heavily fetishize previous decades not only in subject matter but also in the way they depict and render things?

I know each decade's zeitgeist also features elements of nostalgia for a previous decade so the 90s had tons of comfy suburb 60s nostalgia, the 00s had 70s nostalgia like Austin Powers and funky music, the 10s went hard on 80s nostalgia but I feel like the 2010s were the first time people rejected their own decade's inventions like accessible HD digital video and photography and instead used tons of filters to try to imitate old film cameras, so when people from the 90s look at 90s photos they're remembering what cutting edge 90s photos looked like, but when people look at filtered photos from the 2010s they're actually looking at photos trying to imitate 80s/90s photos rather than cutting edge 2010s tech

I'm guessing that's because once digital color photos fully matured, they no longer had any color quirks that would mark them as different by decade. A good photo taken by my phone today won't look markedly different than a good photo I took with my SLR 20 years ago.

I've never been super into Simpsons, I watched it a few times on TV but I'd say I've probably watched less than 20 full episodes in my life.
But for some reason youtube started recommending Simpsons shorts to me every day, they're all snippets from random episodes, and I ended4d up watching a lot of them.
And holy shit are the newer seasons dogshit. I keep watching and watching and it's just not fucking funny. Sometimes I'll get a clip from an episode of an older season like S4 and I always get at least a chuckle out of it, but the newer ones are always dull as fuck.

I feel like the 96-98 years tend to blend together for most because there were so many iconic games coming out that many played some titles a year after they came out and still played them well into 99 and 00.

It's really hard to choose a favorite year because I was constantly playing and excited for new shit back then.

>Also I remember Philadelphia in the 90's being more violent than it is now

No idea about the US, to be honest, but here in Europe things were much safer in the 90s-early 2000s. There weren't as many immigrants and tourists as now, there were stricter civil laws (especially for big cities) that helped maintain a modicum of order, kids were better raised and there was a sense of camaraderie and optimism in the community.

Just as an example, there's a little park not far from my house. It was fantastic going there as a kid, because it was clean, well maintained, frequented only by other kids and elderly people. I came back just now from a walk with the dogs, after an ambulance was called for a 16 yrs old girl who got drunk and took a too big dose of some kind of drug. Not to sound like a boomer, but things like this would have been unheard of in such a small neighbourhood back when I was a kid.
