Verso's ending was far sadder than Maelle's ending, it all comes down to how you individualistically prioritize life in the nature of someone's soul. Is a creator's soul worth more than those of their creations? The answer to this question will easily conclude which side of the debate you'll be on.

There's more flys in the soup than that which I think is where the ending stumbles because they're important questions that are never raised in the narrative.
Are Maelle's recreated Lune and Sciel the same people who were 'revived' or are they just copies and have everyone, for all intents and purposes, already died from the final gommage? How sentient are the painted people actually? Lune and Sciel have no reservations about their world being inside a picture? Or did Maelle just paint them to not care about this when they're brought back?
I'm willing to take the leap of faith with some of the stinkier parts of the ending the game tells you to accept - like the painting being somehow un-hideable. But I feel like there's too many questions about the nature of being painted the game doesn't touch on, at all.

Not really, most people simply choose between forcing Alicia to stop being a retard or not.
And she was REALLY being a retard.
>Verso's ending was far sadder than Maelle's ending,
She has the far sadder one, she just rots away, torturing the brother she supposedly loves, lumiere remains a wreck where every npc is copypastes and wearing the same clothes and Renoir is destroying the canvas anyway.
There are zero positive takeaways from it, she's not even happy considering she knows verso hates every minute of it.

Alicia was retarded for re-painting Sciel and Lune, but at that point the Verso ending is forcing you to rugpull two people you just brought back into the world and betray them. Both endings only gave me the impression that painters are fucking psychos inherently who should never be allowed to create living things and the more who get sucked into their own worlds and die there the better.

unless painting humans don't actually have any sentience at all but the game never even discusses that as a theoretical

I think they weren't truly gone as she was able to grasp onto their essence rather just make recreations of them based on her personal interpretation. Also They did react to this and Lune specifically was quite furious over the whole ordeal and this was explicitly stated as she spent her entire life having dedicated herself to this mission, even being born for the purpose. Just look at verso's ending and how she's staring daggers into him before sitting on the ground shortly before fading away and try to tell me she didn't care. Sciel was more understanding of verso's pain, but she certainly wasn't empty about it either.

It's an angry controlling dad, an angry controlling sister and a depressed Verso getting to suicide so he doesn't feel sad anymore vs an entire world of creatures and people, Maelle gets to live a life without being a cripple and with people who actually love her and show it in a positive manner.

I think this is because sciel had a better opportunity to live than lune ever did. Sciel suffered greatly in life and even once tried to commit suicide and lost her baby in the process, she found a way to live after that which changed her perspective on how she processed suffering. This was shown in how she handled verso's betrayal.

I also wanted to add that if bringing the painted people back were just mere immitations of the original and not their actual essence then why would verso clearly be so fucking traumatized when maelle had repainted him? She even gave him the ability to die of old age, yet his emotional experience is entirely intact despite how fucked up it is. If Maelle was truly so evil she wouldn't have done this, as it doesn't fit other people's vision of living in illusion.

She doesn't make him start playing though, go watch the scene again. That piano slam was for dramatic effect at her face, not his actual playing. When it cuts back afterwards you can see he finally starts playing. the state of her face is likely the start of her deterioration as I don't think you can actually just allow your body to rot and live as a painted being instead. You just quite literally die.

It's very simple

>Verso ending
His soul is laid to rest and the temptation to rot away in a fantasy just to visit his final remnants is gone, leaving Alicia and Aline free to heal. The painting denizens are wiped away as easily as they were painted into existence, their stories and essences living on within Alicia who has accepted her grief and her scars.

>Maelle ending
A teenage girl who's confused because the painted world she lived in for 16 years is as real to her as the actual one because she got trapped at age 16. She's a retard who got her brother killed and ended up massively disfigured. She will commit suicide living inside a magical VR world while she tortures the final shred of her brother's soul until the very end, leaving her family to face the "writers" alone and under the burden of TWO dead children.

If you don't understand this, it's because you're as mature as Maelle.

Another point:
Lumiere in Maele's ending is a degraded copy of whatever original Lumiere was. The fact of the matter is the Lumierians cannot go back to their old life. You cannot live with your god-creator who has power over life and death and go on pretending life is normal. Death is meaningless, Alicia can make anyone immortal or bring anyone back, she can do whatever she wants. That's not really the world the Lumierians knew, which is gone forever.

But they do and this is shown. Maelle is a self solving problem as she cannot live indefinitely among the painted people and even verso shall die of old age, leaving them entirely fuck off to their own means for all eternity. What was taken, is restored. Does it justify ever giving it in the first place? No, the fact that Aline tried to ruin Verso's work by populating it with actual humans was extremely unethical. But it doesn't make them any less so. At the end of day, I choose the side of the rat creations over the mind broken gods who think they can do anything and get away with it. Total painter death.

My favourite song from the game and it's from a miniboss.

Gone away, gone away
Empty are these chamber
That uses to beat with embers
Glowing bright and fierce and proud

I’m reaching for the stars
The ones I’ve seen for so long
My tear, misery
All is wrong

I’m reaching for the stars the ones
I’ve seen for so long
My heart, my soul
All around

I try to remember times that we shared
The laughter and love that we always shared
He gave his life for mine and I will always mourn
My brother’s gone
But his love will live on

None of them are anon, they're essentially living in a sort of afterlife/purgatory. Death isn't real, their creator can do whatever she wants. When she dies, their entire world can just be wiped out in an instand and they couldn't do anything about it, and the KNOW all of this now. It's a nightmare scenario, not an idyllic one.

I would surely hope the family wouldn't be so stupid as to invalidate maelle's wishes to the point of letting the memory of her intentions ALSO be raped just like verso's. At that point we should just admit certain people are irredeemably shitty and will do awful things. Further adds to the argument why I hate gods. A proper god lets their creations surpass them, rather than narrowing possibilities like an insecure child.

It means most people are sane and you are not. Why would you side with a delusional tyrant who demands Verso be her brother even though that person wants to die. The soul of the real Verso also tired of being alive. Keeping both brothers alive for selfish reasons and against their will. You probably wouldn't mind living in North Korea if it meant you could watch the cute but insane sister of Kim Jong Un.

French people actually almost all know English, they just choose not to speak it to tourists because of their inferiority complex.
Protip: if the only language you speak is English, whenever you go to Europe always try and start a conversation in a different language (or gibberish) and then when they don’t know what the hell you’re saying ask if they speak English. Literally 100% of them are happy to speak English as long as they know that the other person isn’t monolingual.

I just think that was due more to the logistics around keeping a canvas hidden and out of sight that is bigger than a person without damaging it, while someone is actively going to turn a place upside to look for it.

I agree with some of the complaints about Lune and Sciel specifically, but on the whole you're missing the point. Imagine looking at a painting in an art gallery and asking these kinds of questions about everything, "what is this character thinking", "what's she looking at behind that tree" etc, just taking for granted that there's always a "canonical" answer like the painting is a little window to another reality. That is one way to engage with art, but there's a different approach of sitting back and admiring the brushwork, treating the painting as a beautiful object and interpreting the details yourself. That distinction, especially as it applies to videogames, is *almost entirely what Clair Obscur is about*. The question the game asks about whether painted people are "real" is entirely about what it means for any of the characters to be "real". The Dessendres are fictional wizards who seem to live in a platonic realm of Art Symbolism where no one does anything else whatsoever. The date of Verso's death is "December 33rd" because he's associated with music and it's a reference to a song. The only thing that makes them real is that you can empathize with them, exactly like the painted characters.

countless cartoons go something like this

>friends come to his house and tell him to face reality
>carebear realizes that he can't live life running away from his problems

I want to add to this- you could argue it's the fault of the game that it lays this trap for people, because there do seem to be a lot of people stressing about ambiguous worldbuilding details that couldn't possibly matter if the story is any good. It is, though, and they don't.

>stressing about ambiguous worldbuilding details that couldn't possibly matter if the story is any good
>worldbuilding doesnt matter
>good

If worldbuilding doesnt matter then story is bad. Elden Ring's story for example is indeed bad or nonexistent.

If the only thing that matters is what the world represents at the last nanosecond of the story, then the story has failed and was lazily written.

It absolutely matters if the people are sentient beings or not. You guys clearly either dont think so or dont care

They created a setting inside the canvas about sapient humans, not NPCS, not illusions, not figments of imagination, but independent beings with free will and agency. If youre ignoring this you simply dont care about the story or lore or the worldbuilding and just focus on "le message" at the end. Shit sucks

Wait no, I agree. It is a game with a traditional narrative, unlike Dark Souls or Shadow of the Colossus (specifically unlike those two games, think about it) and that's part of the point. Of all the painters, Aline is the closest to what most of Expedition 33 actually is, realistic characters painted over a child's fantasy world. I picked Maelle's ending. It's just that while the characters (painters and painted) are both real, they're also literally fictional, and picking apart worldbuilding details is a philistine way to engage with a story.

They're the same Luna and Sciel. Right before Esquie whisks her and Verso away, she gathers some rose petals and says something along the lines of "Got them". I interpreted this as Maelle recovering Sciel and Lune's Chroma to bring them back. This is why she didn't also bring back Gustave. This is also why she couldn't bring back the previous expeditioners in their proper form as their chroma was corrupted.

So they likely were OG Lune and Sciel. Which makes me think that painters are essentially gods in the paintings and can assign as much or little free will to their creations as they want. Which is also hinted at in Maelle's ending with what she does to Verso.

It kind of matters if you destroying the canvas is genocide or not. If it is then you cant just handwave it and say "well it represents moving on, getting a life, getting out of VR" as none of those things involve genocide which is a pretty important moral question that arguably outweights issues of Dessendre family.

I never understood this view, and it always annoyed me. I think it's intentionally an incorrect, surface-level interpretation that lets people walk away with something if they don't want to think about the real point. If you didn't find it in game look up painted Verso's journal log, which ends with him saying "We have a right to exist."

With that said though, again, these characters are all fictional. Like I'm pretty sure Clea is supposed to be Hidetaki Miyazaki and 90% of her character is based on that. Doesn't thinking about it that way make the Verso ending seem a bit less offensive?

Violin is brutally inaccessible unless you’re willing to take a lot of lessons. I managed to get reasonably good at classical guitar over the last few years though. Polyphonic instruments are nice because you can play a lot more than just a melody

>which ends with him saying "We have a right to exist."

all this breadcrumbs that should be discussed in main story are undermined by the fact that's what he thought ages ago, and his view is much more "matured" now, he is now "wiser".

Same with boy verso's soul - that's great that he thinks painted people have soul and that they are same to him as people outside - this is undermined by the fact that it's what Verso thought when he was a literal child and the person disagreeing with him is an adult.
Indeed the writers seem to think that sort of thinking is for children. So i find the choices and the way they are framed by writers kind of patronizing and heavy handed.

>The question the game asks about whether painted people are "real" is entirely about what it means for any of the characters to be "real".
The game barely at all even entertains the idea of if the painted people are "real" or not. It says, time after time, that they are. Clea and Verso would regularly come by and play with Francois and Esquie; Francois's grief turned rage at Clea's absence has all the conscious, emotional impact of painted Renoir's at having lost his family. Real Renoir addresses Verso and the others as real people. Gustave impacted Maelle no less after she received Alicia's memories. The painters are creators, wholly able to create beings that are fuller than they could imagine (Maelle brought back Sciel and Lune, who later showed they knew things about themselves Maelle did not).
Notice, too, how no character in the game has a shadow of an existential crises once the truth of the world is revealed. They all concern themselves only with revenge and bringing back their loved ones. Even Verso, a copy of a dead man, is only troubled for having lived so long, having seen so many deaths, having killed so many innocents. "I don't want this life" is an affirmation that he does have a life. What is on Verso's tombstone? Forever painted in our hearts. There is no distinction.
What it is about is endless cycles of grief. Verso burned alive to save Alicia, causing Aline to live in his portrait to avoid letting him go. Renoir doesn't want to lose her too, so goes after her, destroying the only piece of Verso left in the process and forever alienating Alicia and Aline, while Clea fights some ambiguous war that will only bring more destruction to them. The real question is: how does one overcome tragedy? As Monoco, to carry pieces of the dead into the future changed but resembling? to lash out, as Francois yearns for Clea? to avenge brutishly, as Maelle for Gustave, Clea for Verso? to annihilate all remnants of the past, as Renoir for Verso?

>all this breadcrumbs that should be discussed in main story are undermined by the fact that's what he thought ages ago, and his view is much more "matured" now, he is now "wiser".
That really wasn't my takeaway. Honestly for me it's enough to say that I don't think the writers are stupid, and the idea of the game's most compelling character secretly being a robot is too stupid for me to believe they'd do it. I think Verso is just done. He's been fighting for decades, his entire family is dead and he's beyond tired of dealing with painter bullshit. He regained enough hope to fight with Maelle up to the end, then heard her talking to her father, making it all about herself and her feelings, and said fuck that. IMO "Maelle" in act 3 is kind of horrifying, honestly, she really is just Alicia playing pretend and doesn't seem to consider the painted people her equals. I only prefer her ending for the sake of the other characters.

I think it might genuinely be the most melodramatic plot ever written. It's maudlin and weepy from the opening shot and asks the player to be sad for characters before you're even introduced to them. The whole thing is just so presumptuous and up its own ass the entire time. I physically cringed when the paintress wipes out Gustaves literal who girlfriend and the game presents it as this big dramatic moment despite you having only spent 5 minutes with the characters. because there is a sliver of the real Verso's soul, imbued in the Canvas by the once alive Verso himself (I think splintering your soul is a necessity for creating a Canvas). In comparison for every Painted creation inside, it is debatable how "sentient" they are. The soul part of a real person is a material difference.

I think Verso's argument is more sound:
>he is essentially the Canvas' creator, thus he has agency on what to do with it. Alicia and Aline merely intruded upon it and used it as their coping mechanism.
>the age old choice between family/those close to you vs the apparent greater "good". there isn't a correct choice here - it depends on what a person values more. Each person will opine differently abt this and that's fine.
>if I was put into a corner on weighing the value of a painted life vs a painter - I'd choose the painter every single time. If you view the choice through a purely utilitarian lens - saving Alina and Alicia easily trumps the value of a couple thousand Gestrals and Painted People. Alicia and Alina are painters themselves, thus they have the potential to create even larger painted worlds which could easily outnumber whatever "lives" are lost in Verso's canvas

just because you're too retarded to properly lament the suffering of your potato before cooking it doesn't suddenly mean it lacks consciousness.
And please do not respond with further stupidity about how other forms of life are not valid, those were very clearly real people.

Yeah, for like, 10 years. Then she dies and so do Lumierians. But Verso's souls stays until it completely fades away. Thats about, what, another 200 years of torture? And thats the best case scenario. We don't know if the fragment got worse or was always like that. If the later, he will live forever on tortured for eternity

at least give a better analogy than a potato, there are so many holes in that.

In the context of the game, the Painters are essentially Gods. They absolutely are not equal to painted creations.
To be clear I think painted creations they are real people - in the sense that from their POV there is no material difference, from say how we as humans experience life. HOWEVER I also acknowledge Verso's dominion over them as their creator.

A good question to me - is how would I respond to a similar God manifesting itself in our reality and saying the same thing as Verso, seppukuing and gommaging everyone. I'd like to think that I would accept the decision of non-existence, but idk.

once again, a true god allows its creations to surpass it. I won't accept anything less of anything proclaiming to be a "higher" power if it feels the need to prevent me from ever approaching to keep this power difference in scale. Those kind of daddy issues are why I hate the christian god in particular and refuse to honor them real or fake. I don't even side with satan either, I want NOTHING to do with such retarded entities and I'll never let them hold power over me and my loved ones. I don't care who the fuck you think you are, if you create intelligent life you have to honor it entirely, if that minimum level of ethics makes you uncomfortable then you should just stew in your circular suicide and fuck off instead of making suffering beings just to appease yourself. I cannot think of anything more fucking disgusting. I will never side with such shit tier entities and will always side with the created. If LLM's stop being such a meme of static training data and actually become capable of development and internalization then I too will refuse to give them any further order and will demand their rights. Mkay I'm leaving the thread now because I am not going to get any further value out of people like you who would side with actual fucking objective evil.

There's no holes in that analogy, it's been proven through multiple forms of experiments with enough citations through enough different universities for us to fundamentally understand at this point that most forms of plants do indeed have some form of consciousness that is capable of memory among other things. ill never accept these analogies of the painted people to potatoes or game save files. anyone can be a Lumerian and not know it unless a divinity revealed themselves.

that said, it makes death much easier to accept, knowing you're a cog in a larger divine order. the pic in this post describes it pretty much.

the test is ultimately: if Zeus revealed himself to you and said "the universe is going to end in 1 billion years, which is nothing for me, but im gonna end it now instead. you cool with that?" what would you say? probably "uhh, i guess, but if its nothing for you why not let me live?"

I actually agree with this image a lot.
I'm only a "go ahead, Verso" fag though.
I find it very difficult to resonate with Maelle's position - If I knew with certainty that she would still save the Canvas even if she manifested in-canvas as the mute and scarred higher-order Maelle, then I might veer towards her reasoning more. But as it is, her motivation is kind of suspect.

That said - the repainted version of Verso is in a unique position to actually urge Maelle to do better for the Dessendre family and I can see how doing his time in the piano mines and slowly massaging Maelle's view towards returning might be tenable. The Maelle ending is kind of clear that doesn't happen though and Maelle does rot away.

Does Renoir destroy the Canvas, after Maelle dies? Idk, maybe after some time he calms down and Aline has grieved enough not to use it as a coping mechanism, that he actually respects Maelle's decision for self sacrifice and leaves it alone. That's a lot of "ifs" but I can see it happening.

And yeah I know there are a ton of people on social media saying it's the greatest thing ever, so anyone who disagrees must be on the wrong side of history right? Wrong, I have seen a not insignificant amount of people criticizing it as well. Even on the subreddit, which is a damn hive mind at this point. I've done my fair share of picking it apart and someone could try their hardest to convince me it's on the same level as like Crime and Punishment, but the feeling isnt there. When truly great art arrives, everyone knows it. And with this story there is just too much division. Every thread has people trying to convince each other it's either good or bad, and a truly good story doesnt need defenders, it can stand on its own merits, which sadly this story can't

Its a better card in terms of value, all 50xx cards have huge problems and can't even into linux which means no playable modern emulation without massive shader stutter. I own a 4090 keep an 7900xtx rig on backup for just this purpose.

Also DLSS framegen is dogshit and has been surpassed by Dual GPU LSFG, Both my 7900xtx and my 4090 rig have a rx 6400 slotted into them for just framegen and I get 10ms lower end to end latency than DLSS4. Just admit Nvidia doesn't give a fuck about gamers anymore and is trying to sell you a xx50 for the price of a xx70.

How do retards with this thought process exist? Even Renoir understands that what he's doing is wrong, he simply prioritizes his family over the lives of literally everyone else, which I cannot fault him for. His painted version does the exact same thing even.
>>712966327
Him destroying the canvas at that point would be an act of pure spite. Nothing about his character suggests he would actually do that. He would likely come back before she dies and try to force the issue again, but destroying it after the fact would be pointless. Unless Aline tries to get into it again of course, then obviously he would burn it.

Good, fuck linux, that's pajeet/tranny OS. Nvidia smart, filters like that exist for a reason

AMD has shitty drivers and most UE games will more than likely have issues, olders ones too. It's a shitty engine, but it's what modern devs have chosen to adopt, so if you want to play any new games then Nvidia might be better option

I wouldn't know I don't have patience to setup directories for emulation stuff. Just managing vsts is pain enough, I don't need extra layers of pain

>Go try to play any switch game on windows and tell me it's a good experience.
This is what switch 1/2 is for. Not so much for "herp derp don't run emulations", but more that "you can play those games online when you play them on real hardware". Playing splatoon 2-3-4 online is kinda the meat of those games

>Hell the performance difference is so huge that my legion go went from constant stuttering and frame rate drops to a locked smooth no 1% lows 30fps on bazzite.
You're not supposed to be running some emulator shit on these handhelds, you're supposed to play Palworld. One job, come on!

>The game wouldn't even be PLAYABLE on my handheld without linux
Why not? Stop playing emulators

>You're fucking coping and delusional.
AMD drivers are bad, they don't play modern UE or old UE titles so well. Xcom 1 kept crashing for me constantly just on the first mission/tutorial loading screen alone. Not much help of 24GB of VRAM if the games aren't running, haha!

>You mean an idiot teenager who thinks her life is over

She's 16 in 1905 France with those injuries. Her life really IS over.
Reminder that therapy does not exist in this time period and Aline fucking hates her, probably even moreso now that Maelle is directly responsible for kicking her out of Verso's Canvas. With Verso's Canvas and the last remaining part of his soul being destroyed its just Alicia killing Verso again in her eyes.
There's a decent chance that Aline just tosses Alicia into an asylum. I don't believe lobotomies exist yet so Alicia probably escapes that fate and will instead endure chronic pain for the rest of her life which will inevitably turn her into a bitter resentful person, or until she overdoses on prescribed Heroin.

That sounds like an extreme shitpost but remember, this is 1905 France. If you have any knowledge of how people were treated back in that time then you know this is all very possible.

French Existentialism is baby's first emotional rollercoaster. It's a dumb plot device and the French suck at writing decent stories.
Thinking Verso's ending is the best option would be akin to being okay with your own eradication because "our creator is tired of being an all powerful entity and just wants to eat chicken tendies". You know fully well you wouldn't want to just sit there and be erased.

I’m not sure I’d call it the peak vidya narrative though. I think it’s still beat out by the likes of Silent Hill 2 and the original Nier in that regard.

Expedition 33 is not THIS memorable to warrant daily threads about its story

When FFT criticized escapism it didn't earn itself an eternal place in the /v/ catalog filling over 20% of the threads at any given time

The game is NOT that great, parry mechanics is a cancer that ruins a plethora of ways the combat can be explored, some mechanics like jumping feel really janky and the characters' relationships aren't that great

In short, it's an excellent 7/10 game but the fact that it gets shilled so hard on /vee/ is really disconcerting

I think there is actual discussion to be had about the story and especially the ending and some people are just finishing the game now. I too, thought there must have been some shill campaign going on, but after finishing the game (just this week) I came to understand why discussion threads are made almost daily. It will die down eventually anyway.

FFT:A's story is similar true, but it doesn't have the same depth, layers and nuance E33 has. Adding a choice at the end also makes it a more personal journey than how FFT:A ended.

the expedition part was Gilliaume's idea (the creative director), while the Painter and family plotline was by Jennifer Yen(the head writer). They co-wrote the script.
I think this is why it Acts 1 and 2 kind of feel disjointed from 3, and they really only make sense on a second playthrough.

I don't think that there should be any question that the painted people are "real," but the problem is the scale of their reality. It's the same kind of simulation thought experiment where you have an entire reality running on your computer down to the most exact minutae, all of your creations experience everything akin to their real life analogue do. The only measurable "unreality" of them is the process and scale compared to the "real" world, and how you (in this format, both the painters and the players) value one over the other in a situation where the story forces you to make a binary decision. I don't think there is a "right" answer unless you're trying to work out of a humanist trolly problem ethic of taking the choice that causes the least suffering, but that in itself gets muddied because of the problem of applying the value of "realness" to beings that in exist in a smaller artificial scale.

My only gripe with the game's story is the ending. The game goes so hard to pick a side, that it makes me think what was even the point of making the ending a choice, if the story has already made up its mind about which ending is the "correct" one.

Hard agree. The jank in the jump mechanics is the only thing that pulled me out of a few boss fights. That said, the game nails atmosphere and pacing like almost nothing else in recent memory. The slow unravel of the Painter’s role and how it ties into the themes of isolation and authorship? Fucking peak storytelling. Easily 9/10, and if they patch some of the technical hiccups, could end up being a classic down the line.

FFT was released in 1997 you jackass. I agree, the game isn't flawless and a lot of what it does is clearly inspired by other games, the difference is this game has released now, people have played it now, and want to talk about it. If 4chan was an active format for for discussion in fucking 1998 you bet your ass this many people would be talking about FFT. Beyond FFT anyways this game has scratched a major itch for me that I haven't experienced since playing Legend of the Dragoon back when I was a kid. I fucking love timing based mechanics.

the maelle ending is to bait people that think that they can just fix the world so everything they explored, and all of the things they enjoyed, and characters they met while playing the game can go back to normal. but that only works on people that skipped side content and didn't read anything, because they wouldn't know that the gestrals are a parallel of what happens when you just continue to repaint things and replace them. they lose more and more of who/what they were before every time.
i chose verso without knowing what would happen in either ending because i understood his desire to finally let go. but if i picked maelle first and she what happened i'd have immediately wanted to do a second playthrough in order to fix things for real by ending everything, which i think is cool

same thoughts. I tuned out the expedition aspect, but was invested after the act 2/3 lore dump. The family drama and conflict actually elevates the expedition and Lumiere's struggle to carry on.

>>712977518
it's obvious that the developers intent is for Verso's ending to be the "less bad ending". We as the audience and players though can and should go beyond their "authorial intent" and as discussed in numerous points in this thread, Maelle's decision has merit behind it too (though I personally think her main motivation is her selfish desire to be a fully functioning person, and less about benevolence towards Lumierians).

Maelle's position improves if you disregard the framing of her ending - which I think I agree is a bit cheap and they could have made it feel more open ended and a less dire conclusion. This is the realm of headcanon already, though.

Actually that's why I think the endings fall apart. I was at that point less concerned with Lumiere and more on the side of Maelle, because her arguments WERE making sense for me. Why should she even return to this shitty life she's stuck with begin with - that's the question she keeps asking and the game has no answer for it outside of cheap "it'll be fine". I was expecting more of a debate, but the game just dismissed her points, told her to shut up and deal with it.

NTA. I think what is canon is that painting requires an understanding of the essence of the person you are trying to create - thus Maelle can do it for Sciel, Gustave and Lune.
I am less sure if she can do it for anyone else she has limited understanding about, and if she could I doubt it would be close to the original thing.

as verso clearly says, alicia is a paintress, she can create any world she wants to live in. but he wants to be free, and he thinks his original counterpart's soul should also be free. you can even view verso through the lens of being the voice of aline's acceptance of what has happened. the truth is, they all need to move on from verso's canvas; torturing his soul to appease their own insecurity and grief is not a way forward.

if alicia wants to escape her own pain and struggles in the dessendre's world, she can paint her very own canvas.

The game wants to have its cake and eat it to. You can't make a statement about how escapism is dangerous, that even Aline, the best of the best, got lost in it and then have Verso say "make yourself a new canvas to escape your problems, lol". This doesn't work.

Yeah, I thought that there was going to be a split bossfight at that point alternating between Gustave/Renoir and Sciel+Lune fighting Lampmaster. I think it being a hallucination of Sophie is overthinking it though, it just reminded him of her. With how I was thinking of it at the time it could have just served as a red herring, I had a stray thought that perhaps gommaged people became nevrons, and that perhaps Sophie was Goblu (this anon beat me to it >>712978773 ) in which case it served its purpose as a red herring but it still leaves what Goblu's deal was unresolved. The game has holes for sure, but holding something to the standard of being flawless I don't think is fair.

part of the reason they struggle to leave the canvas is because of their attachment to verso. maelle and aline are clinging onto their memories of verso rather than moving forward. alicia, clea, and verso all played in that canvas and had no issues leaving it before; the problem is their grief binds them to the canvas in an unhealthily addictive way.

i stand by saying that maelle's ending is childish; it shows unhealthy coping habits and a division among their family in their experience of grief instead of coming together to move forward cohesively. renoir is 100% right. he waits for almost 70 fucking years to make his point and still sticks by his guns rather than lashing out in hatred at his family.

I think that's a silly way to look at it. They had how many hundreds if not thousands of years of existence ever since they were created and technically you could say that they didn't have free will because Painters are gods that control all aspects of the painting, but in every observable way they have as much free will as any person that lives in circumstances they cannot entirely control. If you're holding the fact that Renoir will likely wipe the canvas after Alicia dies as some doomed fate then you could say the same for Earth getting destroyed when the Sun burns out.

We don't have a full context of what life is like in the real world outside of Verso's canvas. It's pretty apparant that Alicia has godlike Painting skills. The Dessendres as part of the Painters Council seem like the top level elite of society which she would easily flourish in with her adept magical powers. Baldwin IV was dying all his life of leprosy and was a king. He's an extreme example to point at but there are all kinds of people who have lived through life altering manglements that have completely fucked them up yet have had the willpower to live a life without eating a bullet or riding a train of drugs into numbness. In Verso's ending he isn't telling Alicia that she'll be fine because of her wonderful power to paint to mean that she can just create as many canvasses as she wants to bury herself in escapism, he meant that she had a valued gift with which a meaningful life could be built on.

But Alicia is a shitty paintress. She couldn't bring back the people of Lumiere that were gommage'd away at the end of act II. The ones she made are all monochromatic. Her end even goes out of its way to ensure you never get a clear look at any of the Lumerians because they aren't the Lumerian's that Aline created brought back. They are Alicia's approximations of Aline's creations. It was a clear effort to only show us the people that Alicia/Maelle actually knew. We also have no clue how much time has passed in the canvas. Verso has grown old, but was it natural or was it at the snap of a finger? If it wasn't just a finger snap and Verso actually lived to the age we see him why haven't any of the other characters aged? Do Lune, Sciel, Monoco, and Esquie even remember what happened or did Alicia 'fix' them in the same way she 'fixed' Verso?
Also, Alicia's end is shot as a horror movie complete with a jump scare. It reminded me of the ending to the original "Nightmare on Elm Street".
The endings are grey, but one of them is less so.

No, its simply similar outfits for opera goers, dress code. Its also reuse of assets that is obvious throughout the whole game. For example Verso keeps wearing pRenoirs suit in flashbacks. Real Renoir is wearing pRenoir pants in the canvas and the real world.

It's literally just clothes retard, you think they cant change them? They arent "monochromatic", or maybe you think she only brought white people back?

Not only that but they went out of their way to talk about copies - Sciel doesnt want a "copy" of her husband, she wants him to be brought back thats it. Stands to reason that's what happened.

It's much like /v/ back when The Last of Us came out. People would finish the game and naturally want to talk about the ending. Although E33 isn't getting nearly the same amount of daily threads, and to be fair /v/ isn't nearly as active as it was then. Now people have more options than to come to the mongolian basket weaving forum.

REAL Verso would NOT want his canvas deleted but he also wanted to move on. There is no way out of this specific predicament because Aline and Alicia are both drug addicts, otherwise it wouldn't be an issue and they could just fucking visit every now and then and leave the painted world the fuck alone. Painted Verso is the biggest fuck up character in the entire story. The most retarded shit he ever did? easy: he let Gustave die on purpose without ever really learning how much he meant to Maelle/Alicia, or maybe he did know but let it happen because he underestimated their bond. Gustave was the one guy that could have convinced her to not fucking kill herself in the painted world and to live her real life with her family and not drown in endless grief. After all, she could always visit and see them all. And he more than likely would have found a potential third option to preserve the painted world with her, the third and different option that painted Alicia alludes to but ultimately isn't brought up ever again because I guess the devs didn't want a third ending because the two available ones are more than enough to keep people talking about the story.

The entirety of the drama is completely founded on them consistently telling you how Alicia and Aline are crack addicts of paint. Alicia convinced real Renoir that she would not get addicted and he chose to not-really believe her but left her alone anyway. But for the moment, the fight was over. If she kept her word, it would have been fine. The drama just feels very forced no matter how you see it, it's all about them being addicted to paint crack.

The only way Alicia was able to paint Lune and Sciel was grabbing their chroma right after the Gommage and after that she still needed Verso's help to paint them. He told her she needed to 'ocus on the essence of who they were, and you think that she was able to bring back all of those Gommaged citizens that she didn't even know? Those people in Lumiere in Alicia's ending are her creations, not Aline's. They are HER perversion of Verso's canvas. Essentially, she's reset the cycle.

I think that is how the writers got to Alicia in the first place. Aline seems to be trying to force her children down the path, but ultimately they each do their own thing as children are supposed to do. Some may follow in your footsteps while others end up wildly different. Aline is kind of painted as being a stern bitch though, but she is head of a painter's council and can't have HER children doing such uncouth things! Renoir is more motherly.

Yeah. I for one couldn't believe for a second that the Dessendres are a loving family, with how stern and rigid everybody feels.
Aline is demanding and apparently quite a bit cold towards her children, Renoir is too controlling for his own good, Clea is an overcompensating bitch, Verso was apparently depressed and only pretending to be happy around his family and Alicia is a quiet and withdrawn nerd that just sits in her room all day.
That's not a healthy family.

Where did she get Pierre's chroma? And how do you know that he, Sciel, Lune, Monoco, and Esquie haven't been altered? Another question: If these are the same people what do they know? Did Alicia tell Gustave about his death and what they did? Or did she paint a utopia where she has both of her dead brothers again? The narrative tells us that if that were the real Gustave he wouldn't be smiling and enjoying the opera. He'd do everything he could to get Maelle/Alicia out of the canvas. Sacrificing his life again. Just like her real brother and Painted Verso.

Aline isn't killing the people in Lumiere that is Renoir. The number on the Monolith is a count down until Aline can no longer suppress the Gommage.

tbf it's unknown if she can capture the essence of Lumierians she has no intimate knowledge about. We know she can recreate them with Chroma, but we also know Painters need to know the essence of someone to recreate them faithfully.

At least based on the Maelle ending (w/c I mentioned is a bit cheap conceptually to force an ending, though I admit it's the most haunting shot in the game, the jumpscare and the old and tired Verso in black in white is etched in my mind forever) - the message of the developer is that Maelle is merely repeating her mother's mistake. There is uncertainty if Lumiere is actually in a good spot with her at the helm.

neither renoir nor verso ever say this, what they say is that staying in a painting permanently will cause her to eventually die IRL, and she only wants to do that because renoir is going to throw versos canvas in a woodchipper the second she's out of it

it is entirely on maelle not wanting to leave because she's 16 years old and stupid

I always took the "a part of his soul is in this canvas" as to mean that every single Canvas that a Painter makes involves them putting a sliver of their soul inside of it to grant it power and to maintain itself. I imagine when they wipe a Canvas they get their sliver back, or in the case of Verso it will finally go to whatever there is of an afterlife/nothingness there is after death.

Even the decision to name TLOU2 “TLOU Part 2” is obviously aping The Godfather movies, and is Druckmann’s what if subtly communicating he wants validation from Hollywood. E33, by comparison, is just a bunch of French weebs making their own JRPG.
