I saw someone talking about it on /a/ when it got a western release which made me check /v/ out for the first time, and over the next few weeks I'd read the P3 threads and when I finally played it myself I was instantly hooked. I had just finished high school so I must've spent some 8 hours on this game everyday. So yeah to me it was a big deal, and I want to thank the anons of both /a/ and /v/ for introducing the game and the franchise to my teenaged self

It was popular in Japan, pretty niche in the west
P4 put Persona on the map in the west, but even then just in terms of JRPGs

DLC wasnt really a thing back then, so usually if a game did well companies would release the same game with refinements + an expansion at some point after release. i remember FES came out a little bit before Persona 4, so it was probably also done to keep people interested.

It came out when everyone was looking forward to 7th gen. Back then it was just any normal jrpg from Atlus. The entire SMT franchise was a literal who until they were ported to other systems.

Yes, it was.
Up until that point, Final Fantasy and Pokemon were the unironical kings of JRPGs.
Persona / SMT had really never hit through in the West, and DQ was still a niche thing here as well.

But here comes this new game, with a cool, weird art style, a banger soundtrack, a "real world" setting, with some philosophical and psychological themes, combined with time and team management + dating aspects.

Shit was whacky, and fitter perfectly the 00s' internet-emo era's vibe.
But it was also soon after the NORMALFAGS started pouring online with their iPhones and whatnot, making MySpace accounts and shitposting cat videos, so the "anti weeb" mentality also started spreading.

This "It's like I'm really Japanese!" meme was born out of this, here on /v/, around that time.
Sure, it was later twisted into some actually fun stuff (ie. STALKER = "it's like I'm really Ukrainian farmer!!"), but it kinda shows the big split between the OG oldfags and the nufag / cancer-gen Anons.

What did people think of the protagonist fucking dying at the end of it in 2006?

I played Reload, and everything about the Social Links in P3 seemed so offensively pointless. They mostly aren't super likeable, the only gameplay benefit they give you is the very mediocre Arcana burst, a couple are downright annoying, a lot of them disappear after you reach Rank 10 for whatever stupid reason, and the guy dies anyway at the end. I really doubt I'll ever play any version of P3 ever again because I'll be asking myself what is even the point of talking to these people? Oh, and plus, it's basically impossible to complete every Social Link and made even harder in Reload. I heard New Game+ makes it easier somehow, but I don't know the details.

Whose idea was it to have the teacher have a crush on him, and then have literally nothing happen?

I am so, so, thankful I played P5R first, because I imagine I would have been left with disgust if I played P3 first.

You need to kind of look at P3 as a beta version of what was later done in P4 and then P5. Hashino was still figuring out everything that would later become main stays.

i was a sophomore in high school in 06. i didn't know about or really even give a shit about this kind of game at the time, was too busy playing runescape and guild wars i think, plus i'm pretty sure if you asked me at that age, i'd have said no single player RPG would ever top FFX anyway so who cares about some lame anime shit.... or something. that being said, i do have a very vague memory of hearing about this controversial video game that "glorifies suicide" because of all the gun-to-head stuff. that was briefly a thing among the anti-GTA, vidya-is-the-devil crowd at that time but it didn't really develop THAT level of infamy, iirc.
