I heard people compare this game to Metroid Prime in structure. Will I like it if I like that game?
You do get some abilities to move around places you couldn’t before but that’s not really the core focus. If you like that alone on a space station just learning your way around and trying to not get killed feeling, you will like it.
The space station you're stuck on has 7 levels. You start in the medical section, level 1. From here, you're basically free to go anywhere in the station if you manage to male your way to the elevator of each level, and some key items or codes in one level may be scattered in another.
You need to keep track of the stuff you need, where and why it is needed relative to your current objective, manage your inventory accordingly, and survive the wave of ennemies in each level.
Finally, each level has a security variable. It starts at 100. Breaking cameras or computer nodes will decrease that variable. If you manage to decrease security to 0, you've effectively taken control of this level and no ennemies should respawn, or very rarely.
In short : it's a game for autists, I had a blast but it's not Metroid. They both allow you to backtrack to old areas to unlock new shits. That's it. System Shock is way more immersive with more varied objectives.
>>712971373 (OP)Original was great and memorable, remake is super bland and basically yet another first person walking sim with some slow-paced combat. Sure, graphics aged poorly and would be unpalatable for modern audience, so that's where some refresh was justified, but dumbing down the actual gameplay mechanics is unnecessary and inexcusable.
>>712971909>They both allow you to backtrack to old areas to unlock new shitsIsn’t that basically the point of a Metroid game?
>>712971909That's a good summary. Yeah you could call it an action-adventure FPS, which Metroid could be described as, however SS is way more action focused It does has lore (audio logs) and powerups, but it's not an RPG like Deus Ex either.
>>712972232Remake was pretty awesome because it was authentic to the original experience, the modernization was kind of necessary when the original didn't even have mouse looking (but the enhanced edition did)
It's not like Metroid Prime at all
>>712971373 (OP)shooting is really solid and stages are good
so you might enjoy the exploration
>>712972232don't listen to this faggot
also cyber space is pure AIDs (only reason i haven't replayed the game) so put it on easiest difficulty
>>712975572yk just mod that shit out and buff up the dmg and health
https://www.nexusmods.com/systemshock2023/mods/83
>>712975351>exploration focused game where you’re all alone on a space station and have to find power ups to explore previous areas for more power ups>complete freedom on how you want to approach your routeIt’s more like Fusion and Symphony of the Night than Prime
i really like system shock and dishonored or any imsim for that matter because a lot of the feeling of "badassery" or being cool comes from gaining more knowledge about the map and learning to deal with enemies instead of some power up.
you start out as this guy just trying to make to another safe room to becoming this killing machine that traverse this maze without any issues
>>712971373 (OP)Huh, haven't heard someone call it a Metroidvania before. That's actually not THAT far off, I guess.
>>712975770>FPS game>you're all alone>also you exploreThat's literally all of them, except a couple tacticool squad games.
>it's futuristic, perhaps in space or another planetThat's still like 75% of FPS games.
>>712971373 (OP)Its great and yes, it's as mazy with later unlockable areas. Its also great in VR (UEVR)
>>712976332Honestly the biggest thing that makes it a metroidvania to me is the freedom to backtrack to previous levels with your current gear to unlock other paths you couldn’t access before. Doom or Halo do not let you do that.
>>712971373 (OP)yeah it's kind of like a metroidvania in the sense that you exploration is kind of open ended and you search out upgrades and other items rather than having any rpg systems
the gameplay itself is more dungeon crawler/shooter, if you're playing the remake it plays very much like a modern shooter
I would have never thought to compare SS to Metroid or Metroidvanias. The upgrades you get in SS aren't necessarily required to progress, rather they help to increase your survivability. Metroid progression requires the upgrades you get, but SS more based on reducing floor security, finding keys or switches, and locating the elevator to the next floor. I think SS remake and SS2 is more like Resident Evil. Citidel Station is like the Spencer Mansion or RPD. The mutants and cyborgs are like the zombies, hunters, etc., that become increasingly dangerous as you progress. Audio and text logs everywhere like the logs and diary entries you find in RE. Item and resource management. Although in SS you're not likely to have ammo shortages unless you play wastefully.
>>712975770>find power ups to explore previous areas for more power upsYou don't. keys aren't power ups
>>712979632It’s very easy to run out of ammo in both games, especially in 2 if you don’t get the proper psi augment
>>712981064None of which block of progression
>>712972232original was dogshit that didn't sell because it plays, sounds and looks like ass
system shock? more system shlock
because it's made for nerd
real men play cod
>>712971501It's not like it matters. Sun's gonna explode or something...
>>712972232Old Good, New Bad: The Post
>>712981240There isn’t a single weapon that blocks progression in SotN either yet it’s still a metroidvania
>>712983428Some abilities are needed. It's not needed in System Shock
Is this still worth playing today if you haven't played it?
>>712984076Abilities which you have unlocked from the beginning
>>712984670The remake is sure. 2 is as well.
>>712984686The special ability of walking. I can't believe Donkey Kong invented metroid
>>712984670System Shock 2 is one of the greatest games of all time, and I only played it for the first time a few years ago
>>712984670Worth what? The time you would've wasted watching scat on /gif/?
>>712984817I'm pretty sure that was invented by Hideo Kojima actually
>>712982508 Based take. Doesn’t matter if SHODAN’s whispering sweet nothings through the intercom or if the TriOptimum goons are cooking something extra crispy—none of it changes the fact that we’re all on a rock playing a time trial against the sun. Might as well hack the mainframe while we can.
No, this game is fun finding your way around. Metroid Prime is dogshit
>>712984686The abilities you need to input a code every time you want to use them. Shit like turning into a wolf or a bat aren’t unlocked as you progress, you already have them and you’re just find the button combinations.
>>712982674You recognize the truth and still deny it
>>712972232If I wanted to play the original system shock I’d open up microsoft excel
The remake has less content than a game released on floppy
