I like the idea of him as a mad scientist before dying who didn't actually care for his kids and was motivated by curiosity and ego but after he died he became animalistic with only brief moments of lucidity in between killing. He doesn't talk while he's hunting you down but he does engage in theatrics and taunting and quips when he can. Horror crossover game. The only reason people stick with it or get interested in it in the first place is that is has all the big names. If it didn't then I guarantee you it would have been dead ages ago because it's fundamentally just chasing someone in circles until you either fake them out or gain a speed boost from doing so long enough while on the survivor side it's doing quick time events while sitting at a generator for 50 seconds straight.

The devs also refuse to add any sort of major gameplay modes that deviate from running in circles. Imagine if Call of Duty released with Kill Confirmed and nothing else and the only time something like Team Deathmatch (The giant event or 2v8 in DBD) gets added is once a year for an event while they occasionally make it so new guns spawn in Kill Confirmed (Chaos shuffle) for an event to mix the base gameplay up for a month. That's the level of dumb the devs are on.

It's "For the fans" because of all the references to future games, the attention to detail on the suits and setting, them actually trying to make Mike do actions equivalent to how the games are played, features Matpat as the waiter in the diner scene, references a bunch of the Youtubers who made it explode in popularity in general, and the ending credits song is a song that was popularized in the fanbase at one point.

You can take it at face value for the most part, it's just not going to make sense why Shaggy suddenly went from offering Mike a job to donning a fursuit and trying to kill Mike because that entire part with Vanny and Afton is completely rushed. They do a good job explaining the kids possessing the animatronics, trying to get Mike's daughter to join their dead groupies, and setting up Vanessa to some degree, but they do a poor job with Afton because they spend so much time on the custody rights.

80% of "fnaf lore" isn't told explicitly and needs to be pieced together autistically so my recommendation is playing the games in order (up to Ultimate Custom Night, since from Help Wanted forward things become an even bigger mess than they were before and the narrative focus of the series shifts quite harshly) for the experience and then hitting up theory videos and such because there's a lot of content you can easily miss or ignore in the games plus all the additional context from the books and such. it's kind of a mess to get into this late, honestly.
