It's a pretty solid all round game. The characters, environments, plots, and its twists are all compelling and interesting. The mechanics are actually pretty cool for developing your character and their weapons. The in-game combat is good (although I hope they'll further expound and develop on systems like actively inputting button presses for abilities to include more complex strings), dodging, parrying, and jumping add a more active approach to defending.

I don't remember the last time I played a game with a plot akin to this, perhaps FFTA, but I think it's safe to say E33 does it a bit better than a GBA game.

Unironically, only if you're absolute shit. Most enemies aren't like Elden Ring where they take coffee breaks in the middle of their swings to bait dodges or parries.

Parrying is very in which helps, but really, people are endlessly doing the weird thing on twitter where they regurgitate something that's not true regardless of playing or researching the topic themselves (read: weirdos using it to shout about a game being horrible without playing it, or in e33's case, praise it for doing a ton of unique things that aren't unique, disregarding the things that are unique). I've heard so many casual friends talk about everything it's doing that no other jrpg is doing that...a ton of other rpgs are doing. It's genuinely weird, but this is a really common thing gamers do nowadays when talking about a game they like.

People also tend to not care that it's unbalanced and just about everyone broke the game wide open - I know by the time I finished, and I'm sure the numbers lower now, but ~40% of all people who'd beaten the game had killed both superbosses - that's just saying basically 40% of people who played week 1 were cheesing the entire game structurally, unless you want to straight face say everyone learned the superbosses properly when there was a single legitimate kill up on youtube at the time. And that's not even going into the story being extremely polarizing conceptually once you hit a certain point.

But yeah, I give it an 8.5. Hence yep, same boat as you, although I really do think it's largely the game of the season for people using heavy hyperbole to bash on other games even though it's not accurate whatsoever. 8.5 is good imo! But man is it weird seeing a game that's a love letter to a bunch of different games being used as the staple example for how the games it's taking the core ideas from clearly suck. It'd be like playing a new monster hunter clone that gets a 95 metacritic and suddenly everyones using it to show monster hunter sucks.

Limit dmg doesn't matter if you're doing multiple hit combos at 9999, it's my bad for taking the Frozen Hearts area danger thing as a challenge instead of "you will break the game".
