Stop and go station is a good indicator of the tonal shifts the series can have, although unfortunately these examples only exist in the first three games. (the third game is a little less serious but it still has those moments.)

Donkey Kong's Country and updated Country Returns designs have always been ugly.
DKC is a fugly aah game, that has visually aged like milk.

I think it's more like they were planning on changing the designs at the release of a new console for a good while now and they weren't sure when exactly the movie would be finished and they didn't want the first big motion picture of Mario to use a design that would've been outdated in just a few months
