This looks very underwhelming. The shading is almost nonexistant and it looks more like a mobile game in that department, and the colors look garish as fuck in most footage. It does not look like a next gen title, especially considering stuff like mario oddyssey looked better in that regard, which was on switch 1 8 years ago.
What do you think?

I mentioned switch 1 in the OP for a reason. I get that the whole destruction gimmick is probably very taxing on the hardware, but at the same time it feels loke theres more of an artstyle/postprocessing issue rather than a tech issue.

Here you go, champ: I think the game looks great. DK is as pissed and cool as ever, more expressive than he's ever been, the designs stand out and the use of color is bright and vibrant. The Odyssey boys know their shit, and the game looks fun as fuck.

I think it looks pretty good. Graphics hit diminishing returns a very long time ago as far as I'm concerned.

N64 to Gamecube was a big jump, but there haven't been meaningful improvements since then. Artstyle and Art direction have a much larger impact now, and this has a distinct look that I like from the snippets they've put out. A lot of the wideshots of the different areas looked pretty great, even through the disgusting YouTube video encoding algos ruining it.

I genuinely don't like them pushing grafix so hard that they have to make file sizes fucking gigantic and AI generate shit so the image boils, ghosts and smears on your screen, all just to look uncanny anyway. It's all fucking pointless. Games didn't need to look any better than Assassin's Creed 4 did back in 2013. We could have stopped there and focused on higher framerates, better efficiency and more complex systems under the hood, like for enemy count and behavior. But no. You have to keep chasing that retarded pipe dream of rendering a full movie in maximum, realistic detail in real fucking time.

Tropical Freeze is a 2D platformer, the environments are mostly prerendered and composited together. They're a handful of texture files stacked together with special rules. They can look as clear and fancy as they want because they're not that hard to render, and more rendering power can be spent on the stuff that's in the immediate environment as well as on the character models. That's why Mario Wonder also doesn't have any lower resolution textures and why its lighting looks almost perfect. It's almost entirely all baked in, because there's only one camera angle at a time.
