However, hardware modification of a console I own is an inalienable right. This isn't always a 1:1, but for the majority of releases, especially when companies don't advertise properly, pirating helps to move units. The arrogant thing is to assume that if people couldn't pirate, that they would simply purchase outright, but no, they wouldn't. I know that if I couldn't pirate NES or SNES games from years back, then I would never have purchased games like Contra 4 or various Castlevania. They would have held no interest for me and I would have overlooked them. Nintendo made a fuckload of cash back when they had little bullshit like this - 3DS and Wii were massive successes for instance and didn't even have individual tickets, yo just needed title keys; you could play online (without cheating or otherwise fucking around - you did that, you'd get banned completely differently as it should be) and use CFW safely on your proper account. Its not a huge surprise - think about it. If Steam or even a publisher on Steam decided to try and ban an account or worse a piece of hardware (TPM module) if they found you with a pirated copy, they'd shoot themselves in the foot. Why would you ever buy another game again after that? Instead by being smart about it pirates often end up buying lots of games they wish to support for whatever reason (not to mention ancillary crap like merch). Nintendo and any other corporate fucktards can rot in hell the more they crack down, the more people will be set against them; to say nothing for their refusal to do things that could make them money like selling copies of their games on PC or open platforms, supporting their peripherals on the same etc. Instead, they chose the opposite which is unfortunate.
