A reminder that Steam used no more than 20mb of RAM when it was new.

>Bro just get more RAM
You can't even reasonably run modern Windows on less than 16gb, compared to 7 which has no issue with 1gb.

Yep, Counter-Strike 1.6 was the first game that required Steam to play, and Valve phased out the WON servers, essentially locking out older non-Steam versions and forcing players onto a DRM platform just to play a game they already owned. Steam didn't get universally loved until the late 2000s.

on top of everything the ability for poorfags and 3rd worlders to make some free virtual money on steam market from their ingame items and u have a recipe for success + shills

You could lend, trade, resell, or install your game anywhere without online checks or restrictions. I remember buying L4D on a whim from a thrift store instead of buying it directly through Steam, going home, and realizing that the previous owner obviously used the activation key for his account already, so I was SOL and had to buy it again from for my Steam account directly. Yes, there were CD Keys back in the day which were cancer, but they were much easier to get around. You could always search up online and find one to use for your copy of the game.

Also, when games began requiring online authentication, even for solo or LAN play, offline multiplayer faded to obscurity since it was way more cumbersome and pointless now.

everyone else is wrong
what saved Steam was the orange box, relative software stability and the bargain sales meme of steam summer sales and shit
back in the late-late 2000s and early 2010s, the Steam client software had grown to become decent-ish and Valve released a bunch of hot games with the orange box for super cheap in 2007, locking in a whole generation of people who would swear by Source even until this very day. more or less at the same time lots of 3rd parties started to distribute their games on Steam amidst the death of Direct2Drive and shit. Valve also decided to do bonkers bargain sales which skyrocketed Steam's popularity at the time: consider that, for the better part of half a decade, youtube channels gobbled Steam's dick repeatedly because of the summer sales with many videos racking hundreds of thousands of views (this was a big deal back then). then EA's Origin came out, which was a reskinned EA Download Manager posing as a Steam competitor, and locked Battlefield 3 behind it. that game was hyped to hell and back kinda like Half-Life 3 was, and EA was giga reviled for this move because their software was not perceived to be nearly as good as Steam. there were also spyware scares much like EGS much later had. this combination of factors solidified Steam as this giga shilled, un-criticizable, behemoth of PC game distribution.

Yeah fuck discs.
Fuck storing the cases, fuck fiddling about with swapping them over. The manuals were nice in the really early days but by the 2000s it was all dvd style cases with nothing but the disc.

Convenience and price trumps ownership, even the bargain bin in eb games was still $20-30 (or extreme garbage you wouldn't want to touch) when steam was doing 90% discounts.

No one can point to a better alternative than steam, we got lucky. If you don't like it you can pirate.

One of the other cons with Steam is how people algorithmically discover new titles now. You get recommendations based on data, not people. It's not about what games are worth playing, it's about what games are optimized to sell the most. It's similar to how people plugging themselves into an algorithm on social media has ruined the Internet because no one actively curates their own experiences anymore. It's all about what's trending or what has the highest click-through rates. No developer is going to be incentivized to take creative risks anymore as a result, because if you're not making games for the algorithm, it'll get buried. Lesser known titles back in the day could still make an impact and gain a cult following through word of mouth since there wasn't such an ocean-wide gap yet between the meta and throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks.

workshop makes modding way easier and often eliminates the need for other launchers
better download speeds than anything else i've seen

the only two options that make sense are steam and GOG depending on what your priorities are. physical ownership is a retarded meme, i grew up with it and i couldn't leave it behind fast enough, i was one of the first people on the steam hype train back in like 2006 or 2007.

i see your argument, however, theres two problems

1) my digital library has outlasted pretty much every physical game ive ever owned, in fact by now, many old CDs could be suffering from disk rot, even if you didnt lose em or break em by this point
2) not all devs can afford a physical release, some of my favorite games ever are indies, the guys behind FTL had to use Kickstarter to get the game out the door, i dont think they had enough cash to put the game on CDs

If I had 128GB of RAM I would turn my brand new computer on day 1 and leave it on for the rest of its life, never closing a single program or browser tab, ever, so everything I'll ever need is easily accessible whenever I need it. The day it stops working we throw that piece of junk in the trash and buy a brand new PC with 256GB RAM. Rinse and repeat.

They evolved it from being "just a launcher" to a full digital storefront over time, and then drew in users to it by running deep discounts and sales frequently to get people to develop digital libraries hosted on Steam, effectively locking them to the platform while making an effort to actually improve the launcher as well. Although I would argue that from the mid 2010s onward even Steam has been victim to adding unnecessary bloat I would have preferred the option to remove.

Back in the late 2000s/early 2010s games on Steam would be cheaper at base cost compared to retail (I remember Deus Ex Human Revolution launching on steam for 50 bucks compared to 60 at retail because when PC was more of a niche market publishers were actually cutting the manufacturing cost of printing a disk and plastic case from the product) and it was not uncommon to see fairly recent releases go on deep discounts, which is how the subculture of steam sale threads came about. Obviously, as soon as the PC platform established itself as a truly core market and competitor to the existing console market, all of those discounts in base price and with sales practically disappeared over night. I mean it genuinely when I say that anyone who was fortunate enough to own a gaming PC and old enough to earn a wage genuinely missed out on what was truly a brief golden age for PC consumers that you still have people here bitter about how it ended so soon to this day.

I get the feeling that if piracy didn't exist, PC gaming simply wouldn't take off worldwide the way it did. Maybe it would die off entirely, even. Once everyone was hooked, many decided to quit piracy bit by bit, contributing to the growth of this platform.

Doesn't matter when you can buy so much. I have 60+ tabs, photoshop, bunch of random shit open, and I can still start up a game with no problems whatsoever. Whereas when I had less RAM, I had to close that shit like a peasant.
It's time to get your computer to work for you, instead of pandering to it like a lil cuck, closing all your shit any time you wanna play a game. Buy more RAM and leave everything open.

I still utterly hate the Steam Curator feature and hate how there was no real option to actually remove it from bloating the front store page (especially when you need to scroll past it to even get to the new & trending tab) ESPECIALLY when it first game out and the feature was just nothing but dumb fuck reddit memes like the dude who just kept copy and pasting that one joke from Mass Effect 2 with Commander Shepard being a shill for years. Even now it's still useless with nothing but pedantic 3rd worlders bitching about bullshit I could not possible be even paid to give a shit about. On the front page it's been replaced with the community recommends section but even that is still bloat that I dont care for, as I'm enough of an enthusiast of the medium that I don't need to read the words of another user to formulate an opinion on if I want to buy a game or not. I unironically liked Steam the best when it was as bare-bones as possible.
