Basic != shit. Original had a basic but fast-paced and entirely serviceable combat set in small areas. 2 had bigger areas and new literal button mashing combat system, which is why I always preferred the combat in 1. But as I already said, I'm in minority in this regard.

I'm hard-pressed to say that the hacky-slashy gameplay has improved because you're still just fucking mashing but the worse thing about the new gameplay is how demon management during combat is just straight up non-existent now. MAG replacing MP means you just mash even more now and not being able to tell what skills your demons should spam means you're just slamming buttons 100%$ of the time.

There are election posters for "Hayao Koshimizu" scattered through the city. And they have a crescent moon on them.

If you played V you know the game has references to devil summoner scattered throughout the game. This makes it pretty offical it's the same universe. Remember they said the proto-fiend project has been going on in Japan since anyone can remember.

Because of all the games Atlus has remade or remastered, Raidou 1 is the only one that actually deserved it.
Raidou 1 has great setting, atmosphere, story and characters. It oozes charm, style and soul. The only problem is that the combat was kinda shit even for the time, which was made even more clear after Raidou 2 released and it was way more fun to play than 1.
But Raidou 1 still had better setting, story, atmosphere and characters. Anyone that played the Raidou duology would agree that Raidou 1 with 2's combat system would be a near perfect game.

Yeah, the aesthetic/visual components of Atlus's remasters/remakes/whatever are consistently awful in spite of the bevy of gameplay improvements. In the past it's usually been a bit give-and-take, but the original Raidou's gameplay is so bad that it's still a net gain but it just sucks that devs at Atlus can't make a good-looking game anymore. Everything looks so bright and garish in every game they release now. Even SMTV, despite looking generally really good, has some really rough edges like the generic UI.

Raidou had limited attack options and basically zero defensive options (not even a roll), so the "action" part of "action rpg" was genuinely awful. Plus you could only have one demon out at a time and had very little input on what it does which heavily limited the rpg component too (plus it was just annoying relying on their AI all the time). It was clunky and boring spamming the same two attacks the entire game, and some boss fights were genuinely hard which is a bad mix with a combat system that isn't remotely fun or engaging.

Remaster gives Raidou a dodge plus way more moves including your usual "fill the bar for a big attack with an over the top jrpg cinematic" and "do a long combo or roll at the right time for a powerful counterattack", but much more importantly than that you get 2 demons at a time and have a lot more control over them including literal direct control where you can open a menu and tell them what to do. It's an actual action rpg rather than a really bad action game with some stats slapped on. It's not a masterpiece, it's not even the best action rpg made by Atlus (that's P5 Strikers), but at least it's actually fun now.

From what I've seen this one is pretty much an upgrade in every possible way mixing up the gameplay of the two games to make a definitive one but with a much worse UI for some reason and some awkwardness with the backgrounds since they're actual 3D models this time rather than pre-rendered. I cannot exactly remember what put me off from the second game. I remember liking the gameplay touch ups to your demon summons but disliking the writing and something about Raidou's sword attacks which felt worse for some reason. Do we know if the staff will work on a remaster for 2 immediately or make a new game, I'd love for SMT 4's staff to do something new again.

P4R doesn't look all too great but maybe my opinion will change later. It was very early footage.
Raidou Remastered looks like an upgrade, besides UI and some shading. Raidou 2 does in fact have the better combat and that's what they went with.

Yes. It's a well known cycle that younger people find a quaint retro appeal in things that came before them, with video games specifically you can see this in all the indie games that do the low-poly thing to try aping what PS1 games looked like.

"Obviously" is a strong word to use for something so clearly in the realm of subjectivity, but I won't play devil's advocate, I think the original looks better. There's a difference between "the game doesn't look as good as the original" and "the game is ugly because it was a remake where backgrounds are rendered in 3D and there's no way that could have been done well, they should have just re-used the 20 year old pre-rendered backgrounds".

The backgrounds aren't even the main reason the remake looks worse than the original, it's mostly the color palette and overuse of vfx. It's so retarded to fixate on a bunch of 3D modeled environments being used over low res jpegs like they're inherently worse,

They don't. They really fucking don't. The faces are barely animation and instead of a stylistic approach like FES did (and did well) it tries to do traditional cutscenes. The problem is that it's not even as well animated as a good looking PS2 game, so it just looks flat and boring. You can pretend there's a lot of detail and emotion in those faces, but there just isn't. You getting mad about it won't magically make the facial animations more complex.
