Everyone with and Xbox was having fun with Halo while PS2 owners just sat there and seethed for like 3-4 years before the PS2 started getting decent FPS games albeit universally lower visual quality and slower less responsive gameplay. I'd argue the PS2 didn't get anything near Halo's quality until Time Splitters Future Perfect. (they had Time Splitters 2 which was good but the average PS2 owner had such poor taste they didn't get it, shameful really)

A variety of distinct enemy types and not just "guy with gun"
A semblance of AI and responsiveness to the player's actions which makes them feel more lifelike and less like you're in a shooting gallery

Actually varied enemy types with very different behaviour, appearance, and threat level. Weapon sandbox that actually has functional differences between weapon types, and of course this means certain weapons are effective against certain enemies.

Absolutely this. If you weren't there for the OG Xbox boom, especially Halo 2 matchmaking lobbies, you genuinely missed a cultural moment. Everyone was talking about it at school, clans were forming, rage messages were flying, and it was the first time a console FPS felt like it belonged online. People who missed out just cope by retroactively downplaying its impact. You can’t recreate that kind of zeitgeist even if you emulate the game perfectly now.
