>>713190440>How do I understand if I have ADHD?going to see a psychiatrist would be the place to start.
however, to cut a long story short, here are the DSM criteria
https://www.cdc.gov/adhd/diagnosis/index.html
the way i describe it is if you can't do the things you WANT to do.
lots of people are lazy about their shit job or household chores, but if what you want most in your whole god damn life is to write a book but you can't sit down for more than 20 fucking minutes at a time... ADHD inhibits action EVEN WHEN DESIRE IS INTENSE. that's the most important takeaway.
people with untreated ADHD also tend to develop avoidant behaviours, which are different from ADHD. for example:
>getting "stuck" playing a videogame or shitposting on 4chan or whatever, literally unable to stop doing itADHD, classic case of a failure of executive function to inhibit behaviour
>putting off starting my writing task because 'naaah i don't feel like it right now'avoidant behaviour as a result of a lifetime of failing at my writing tasks and subsequently feeling like shit, not ADHD
the other thing i'd say is that ADHD is a disorder of executive function. executive function is like the hand of god that comes down and tells you to stop being a stupid fucking animal and do the smart thing that you're supposed to be doing. executive function's primary role is to INHIBIT and REGULATE your behaviour - stop you from just being a pleasure-seeker who lives in the moment.
the last thing i'd say is this:
>All this time I just thought it's a severe case of procrastination.Normal procrastination: you put it off, feel a bit guilty, then eventually get it done with some effort.
ADHD procrastination: you literally feel unable to start, like you're paralyzed. hours or days vanish while you do something else compulsively. you hate it, you're aware of it, you can't stop doing it anyway.
