I did a hundred hour playthrough once and after that I lost all motivation to run through the same shitty copy and pasted dungeons and dumb "puzzles" ever again. Not even the lewd mods were enough of a motivation for me to try again

I really tried, I even upgraded my PC, though not for the express purpose of playing Skyrim, which meant I could run better texture mods plus an ENB, plus add a shit load of new content that my old setup couldn't handle.
The result? I was still as fed up with Skyrim as I had been before I modded it. I think it's permanent burnout from knowing what to expect, even if it is tweaked massively.
I'll wait for Elder Scrolls 6.

Is the special edition worth it now? I remember loving how stable it was compared to the OG. The og was a pain in the ass to mod because one thing wrong meant a crash and having to go through every little thing to find imout, meanwhile SE took it all like a champ. The problem was that a lot of modders didn't care for the SE and there were way less mods and some of my favorites never made the jump. Granted last time I played was like 5 years ago.

Its less work and easier to customize and control. Fully being able to customize NPCs requires some hex editing and directing them/expanding interaction is multiple extra layers of mods that can bug out or be incompatible with each other despite having different sets of features. This is a really good one that ties skill exp gain rate to character level (rather than the other way around like in vanilla) and quests completed so you actually have to continuously empty your quest backlog to get stronger and can train skills in the late game really fast. Way better gameplay experience.

I'm 350 hours into my Path of the Incarnate OpenMW playthrough with Tamriel Rebuilt, Province Cyrodiil and Skyrim Home of the Nords. Todd dropped the ball decades ago.
Now I'm not even excited for TES6 because I know Emil will be writing and designing it.

It's either Cabbage and Rudi ENB and some custom tweakz in BethIni. Yeah that's the problem with using other people's modlists. I'd say Lorerim is the best of the bunch I've tried just because it has a cohesive aesthetic and fucktons of quest mods etc, it's really stable too. Making dungeons is an incredibly slow and tedious task. Especially for a single person to do. Bethesda would have a team of like a dozen people work on each dungeon. Each person would do a pass iteratively building it over time. I think SKSE scripts need to be made specifically for the VR version since it's an older version of the game. But the rest shouldn't be much of an issue. I think you can even get the AE and CC content ported to it without too much difficulty if you want that.

The idea that there are "essential mods" is a questionable one at best anyway but just because someone decided to more recently make a mod that does the same thing another mod already did doesn't make it a better mod. The quality of the mod is determined by the skill of the mod maker and not when it was made. Plenty of mods are ancient and still highly recommended. Plenty of modern mods are poorly made trash that will corrupt your game.
