What a shame. Hypnospace Outlaw is a one of a kind game. The kind of kino that you have to dig hard to find. I guess I'll be thankful we got that, at least.
Incidentally and on that subject, do you guys know of any games that can even attempt to scratch a similar itch to Hypnospace Outlaw? I have Desktop Explorer (Pic related) wishlisted but that's literally all I can think of. I'm not really looking for Analog Horror or Hacker type shit. That gives a different vibe even if it seems superficially similar.
I would've thought that Devolver would get behind them since they published their previous game Dropsy. Oh well
>We do want to release or at least show much of what was made, but there still wasn't any gameplay or even a fake internet to see
Hol' up, how long has it been since the game was announced? I would have though the fake net would have been the first thing that got hashed out after the story, even if it was just with placeholder stuff.

None of this makes sense, even from a scam standpoint.
They made a patreon just 3 months ago. What changed?
>>713210775it makes sense to a degree, hypnospace was built using a page builder and fake "language" they made just for the game. they needed music and videos recorded for plot beats ahead of time too like the coolpunk stuff and the mindcrash
doesnt surprise me that scope creep is probably what killed the game. imagine getting multiple albums worth of songs, videos recorded for fake youtube, fake newspapers and all this worldbuilding and then needing to build a game around it

This is a major blow to the Christian game dev scene
>The very short version is: We got a budget this time. We tried to plan the game from the top down, more or less, where we kind of knew all the beats that would happen and what expensive things we could afform to film or have made for the game and how much money we could afford to pay a programmer for X amount of time.
>And because money is involved, you kind of have to go by the schedule and I've never successfully made a game based on a design document. It's hard for me to find motivation, like, find motivation to work on anything for a stretch of time and I've not been able to do it this way where I have a design document and then I follow it. I HAVE to like improvise, like in Hypnospace, like I'm pretending to be a character and making stuff, and then following these trails to make new stuff. Things bloom from other things and then it becomes a big hollistic thing at the end. And if I had to explain it to anyone or put it in a design document, I couldn't do it. It just comes like a tree growing over time or something.
>Also, because of how complicated our core features were in this game, the thing I was really excited about, it was called "Oomph", it's like a fake flash. If you think of the Hypnospace Tunezie, it was a music sequencer but you hit like tab and then you go to a visual mode. And so you could tween little animations that are also synced to the music sequencer and then you hit tab to go back to the music. The aesthetics would have been flash-esque and there's a little bit of hypercard in its simplicity too, with a bit of vector graphics. But whatever the case, we had to cut that. My cool Oomph, which was gonna define the whole look and feel of this era, and cutting that was like... Well, what do we have? We have HTML pages, I can do forums... And blogs... But like, but, I knew why we had to kill it, it just wasn't gonna happen.

And there's some cool things you haven't seen, maybe I won't mention them yet, but we'll figure out how to show you them. And the Chowder Man was gonna return. He recorded more music for this game than for Hypnospace. I want to do right by the music, so maybe we'll figure out how to like release their music and promote it in a way that reaches people.
>We were gonna settle on making a little tour game that could show you what we made, but that kind of... We just needed to stop this. Because of money and practical concerns.

Sounds fair to me. Sometimes creative spark just works like that. What is conducive to making a game, in like regimented hard work, isn't what is always conductive to being the passionate kind of person that can make Hypnospace Outlaw in their own spare time. Big shame, though.

He instead chose to make a DOOM/Duke Nukem clone based on Zane. That was a bad sign to me. I wonder how much of Hypnospace Outlaw was a commentary on it's own development cycle.
Dylan being representative of Tholen being a creative with more ideas than sense, driving himself to finish a project and trying to look past the things that just weren't working. Then, R3eckoning being a manifestation of what Tholen actually thought of the resulting product of Hypnospace Outlaw. Certainly frames the finale of the game as being Tholen making himself wrap up the game and send it off with what little was working satisfactorily, and feeling sorry about all the time he wasted practically screwing around.

Jay had a kid and burnt out after Hypnospace. That's the whole reason he made Slayer, to do something simple and short. He also took like a year long break from Dreamsettler when he had his kids while his programmers were doing all the technical OS stuff. There was a tweet where he basically admitted he didn't start any of the writing and didn't feel passion for the 2000 internet compared to the 90's. Him being eccentric and mood/emotion-driven instead of a serious professional is what led to Hypnospace being so unique but the guy is clearly not meant to be in charge of a larger project with multiple employees. I hope he comes back with a smaller project at some point.
>>713209043 (OP)I don't understand, they made two games so you'd think they would understand how to manage a game's budget and development priorities
But if I'm getting this right they don't even have a demo? What the hell? I just refuse to believe this was a budget issue because both games were successful and he even has a seemingly successful patreon
I feel really bad for the team around him. The programmers building all the new features and all the musicians making new music like Hot Dad.
Judging from his Twitter/Bluesky history he basically didn't do any work for over a year on the creative side of things while still paying for two programmers which he just kept busy by having them create all those features he was unable to create actual content for. Really sad.

And obviously, money wasn't the issue.
And honestly this is a game I played for free on a gamepass trial, and I made it a point to go and buy it at full price on gog because I liked the game so much and it hit such a specific niche with a small dev where I feel like my purchase is more meaningful.
A big AAA dev really doesn't need my money, more importantly I don't think they've earned my money OR my time. But if you make a game, even if its really short and sweet but fun or interesting or unique and not coming from a big bloated dipshit publisher/dev I'm happy to fork over some money, when its available for purchase.

I legitimately feel sad. The first game was filled to the brim with soul.
How do you make the templates, minigames, and get all the art, then get too fucking lazy to actually make any webpages? Is this guy retarded? You have a majority of the fucking assets and code done just hire a writer and fire everyone else.
>>713244120I really don't understand it either, why can't he pass off the assets to someone who cares about finishing the game?

>>713244120Sounds less like he's too lazy to do it, and more like he feels too... stuck? Hypnospace Outlaw's development was pretty freeform, Jay was pretty open about development. Originally it was gonna be about the Outlaw minigame with the player being an Enforcer that was gonna catch "bad guys" online with a few pages included but as he developed it, he realized it didn't make much sense and he had more fun writing the pages so he changed the game to be about the fake internet instead, with Outlaw only showing up a few times for plot reasons.
Dreamsettler having the concept and all these assets already in place means he has less room to experiment, combined with expectations and him sounding really bummed out that he couldn't make that Flash clone work out, makes it sound like he burned out before he even began properly working on it.

It's hard for me to find motivation, like, find motivation to work on anything for a stretch of time and I've not been able to do it this way where I have a design document and then I follow it.I remember hearing Masahiro Sakurai talking about once production starts, he makes damn near zero changes to the game from the design document. With him managing many many many more developers and still pumping out games on a timely fashion, hearing about these difficulties about following a design document make me appreciate his work more.

>>713237093the problem i had with hackmud was that it was clearly intended to be a pvp experience where you could hack other players or pull eve online-type scams or whatever, but the game has like 20 active players who have op defenses and are all friends with each other so there's no pvp
consequently all you can really do is the pve puzzles which turn into actual work really fast (i'm not writing a qr code reader that can deal with missing bits in under 500 lines of javascript, fuck off)
>>713288757zero chance they find someone who can just sub in for Tholen's writing without it being glaringly obvious. Absolute worst case scenario would be a community sequel getting hacked together from whatever ends up getting released.
