Other than being real money bait so you pay for enchantment savers, I do kind of enjoy those systems. In the one I played the maximum enchantment was +15 and from +6 onwards the item had a different coloured glow every 3 levels. Enchantments from 1 to 9 just reset the level if they failed, but 10 onwards destroyed the item. Most people stopped at +7 because the chances got pretty low even without risking the item itself, but it felt so good to be one of the gigachads with +9 for the blue glow. It also makes you constantly wonder whether you could yolo a little bit more power out of your weapon.
