Man it's been so long since I played the GBA ones. Sacred Stones promotion system is still my favorite one of all the games. I like it when a character has a specific class-type they can be.
Modern games rely too heavily on "anybody can be anything" which makes the core design need to respect any possible choice. Part of the reason why I liked Cindered Shadows DLC so much in Three Houses because it was a tailor made campaign to specific units it gave you and what they could do (along with the Battalions. I know you said no modern talk, but I like all FEs honestly.

I've been replaying a lot of fire emblem games. Considering FE7 next, since I barely remember it, but FE8 was boring and lame and had way too many worthless filler enemies that died to javelins / hand axes. Is FE7 like that or is it closer to FE6?

FE before Awakening are just like that, they have this boring quality to them that makes messing with the game more interesting than the game itself. Like how everyone playing old FE does weird challenge runs or talks about character growths and stats that aren't in the actual game. It's sort of like Pokemon, it's a snoozefest until you do a nuzlocke or something and it becomes mildly interesting.
I think there's also an element of asset fatigue, old FE are super low budget and maps are barely different from one another yet the games are very long, so your brain subconsciously gets bored of seeing the same assets over and over.
After Awakening and especially with 3H and Engage the stories/characters/maps/mechanics are more interesting so they can hook you in just playing the game normally.

You also have to remember older games are overrated by /v/ in general by grognards trying to look cool, FE games are not an exception. It's a budget GBA game, your expectations should be rock bottom, but /v/ posters pretend those games are the second coming of christ so you were probably expecting more.

Man, bows and archers were so garbage in classic FE. Their literal only function is dealing with fliers and they're trash in almost every other instance.

I wish they weren't so overbalanced back then, as you hardly ever need them. The only classic game I can think of where fliers are so strong you may need archers may be FE6 On hard mode which is like 1 out of 12 games.

In Fates they fixed archers by making bows hit hard as shit, and by giving hoshidan archers skills that make them hit harder than shit.
A good example is Mozu and how if reclassed to archer and leveled up to 10, she becomes the strongest damage dealer behind camilla.

Not to mention Archer can become a flier and Outlaw can become a 9 move cavalier, so the classes themselves can serve a lot of functions

Snipers are good in FE3 due to frequent and strong dracoknights and obviously in FE2 they have their high range and close counter built in, so they're good there too. Radiant Dawn has crossbows and stuff, Shinon is one of the best units in that game.

Generally archers aren't unusable because of their class or weapon, but that they tend to be given them awful stats that make them irredeemable.

He has strong 1-2 range that pierces human enemy defense and deals effective damage to ice dragons. This is in a game where characters need to dismount indoors and javelins weigh 20. Of course, so does bantu's weapon, but many things fail to double him and the remaining stuff does ~1 damage because his defense is super high. Even against mages his res is quite good.

I don't know why people hype up the GBA games so much when it represented an era of the series' worst stagnation possible where it dumbed down the game mechanics from 5, didn't try to innovate, 6 is riddled with same turn acting reinforcement bullshit and 7 and 8 are too easy. The stories in 7 is overrated and is actually a mess that relies on the antagonist being an idiot to run and Roy as a protagonist bored me to sleep in 6. People bring up the sprite animations but it lacks the dynamic combat and variety animations of future games like with Fates, Echoes or Engage.

Honestly the only gba game I liked was 8. Even if it was easy, the story didn't have as much plot holes as 7 or was boring like 6, and it at least tried to innovate with the gameplay.

She actually has better growths than Bors (same SPD, +10% STR) and female knight gets better promo gains. She also benefits from her lower CON because it makes it easier to move her around with rescue. If you happened to bring Bors to this map, you can do a triangle attack with him, Barth and Wendy for 100% free 3x damage. Swordlock is over exaggerated as an issue there. The only one who really suffers a lot from it is Lyn, while even Guy has enough raw stats to be at least decent.
