It has nothing to do with that, theres sites like steamrep (now extremely slow) and steamhistory that just for some reason have backups and archives of tons of accounts. For example on steamrep you could "go back" to their 2010 profile, and it would show their nickname history, friendslist, library, etc. from that "snapshot" of their profile (as long as it was public)

How do you know what they know about games if you don't talk with them?
As basic social etiquette I talk about mainstream games with coworkers I'm not very close to "did you see that new Elden Ring come out?" because there's no point in bringing up Dwarf Fortress or obscure indie games if there's a chance they might not be interested. But over a couple of weeks eventually a coworker brought up Ace Attorney then I brought up Ghost Trick (which absolutely no one I've known so far IRL has heard about) and the dam unleashed we started talking about a lot more obscure games, but if you just saw me talking about The Witcher or something on my first day you'd have no idea and just smugly keep to yourself "fukken casuals".

The other one at my current job is someone I'll probably never game with online but he's arguably my most pleasant coworker to talk with.
