You can craft a decent enhanced damage magical (blue) weapon with two socks in cube, add two amn runes and it should be able to be useful for some time. Insight is a great merc weapon if done in a good base.
Also you can use life potions on merc, you can move the potion with the mouse over his pic, or use shif+ (1,2,3,4, the number on your belt)
