Double jumping sucks in a platformer it's always to make up for an otherwise lack of good movement. Double jumps should be reduced as much as possible. A good platformer lets you do most things in one jump.

The new design is a phase, this is just a new era for DK for now, Smash will very likely use his regular smash design, given that Sakurai already takes liberties with Bowser DK and others, and he's somewhat independent from Nintendo, the new design will be around for while, I give it about a decade, maybe 12 years
