The monsters in the series have never had a set form. They appear differently to each person and there's no solid answer about what the fuck the otherworld even is. One of my favorite pet theories is that, since it's a projection of one's mental state, one who's wracked with guilt or resentment would naturally experience it in a hellish, hostile way, while the cult in 1 and 3 would've been free from all doubts and guilt, as every atrocity they committed was considered God's will. Going to the otherworld is a rapturous experience for them and carries a price for everyone else.

I remember watching a documentary about the making of SH2, and how much effort was put into giving Maria imperfections. Blotches of darker skin pigmentation on her chest and hands, a small roll of flab on her tummy, brown hair roots growing out... It was a fine line they managed to walk, adding realism without making the characters look visually unappealing.

Start with the hot baseline, then tweak it with normal imperfections that every person has. The protagonist is incredibly ugly. The monster designs aren't scary, at all. So that just leaves the story and the gameplay to keep it together. I don't know why the horror factor is off for me, I can't play Fatal Frame in long bursts because how unnerving and anxious they make me. But seeing every trailer I couldn't help but laugh.

This is not what is happening in Silent Hill 2. If this is what the other games have done (I haven't played them and they're trash so I don't care) then they misunderstood everything.
Silent Hill, much like the demon god that was summoned within it, thrives off of suffering, specifically ailments of the mind as it specializes in turning mind to matter. "The Town's call" is something that is only vaguely referred to and can be understood simply as the town being fucking evil and wanting to kill people or fuck people's heads to cause more suffering.
The town is magnetic to fucked up people with fucked up lives, but it's not like they just go there on a whim. James goes to Silent Hill to kill himself, Angela goes to Silent Hill to finish off her remaining family and die, Laura goes to Silent Hill looking for Mary and Eddie goes to Silent Hill because he's on the run. All the characters have some connection to the town or reason to be there beyond this vague "call" of the town (and Laura shouldn't even be "called" lol). And out of them all, only James and Laura find resolution... in one ending. James dies or condemns himself to further suffering in every other ending and Laura's situation is unknown outside of Leave.
The town isn't trying to teach any lessons, it's trying to drown James in his guilt at every turn. It's through his own will that he finds absolution. By accepting his sin, the town loses its grasp on him and he leaves. The town wins every other time.
This is all very in line with the rest of the series. It's an evil demon town that wants to kill people. 2 isn't different, people are just fucking stupid.

Speaking of the remake, I didn't hate it. It did some cool things here and there. I liked the monster variations and the change of pacing after meeting Maria at Rosewater. But goddamn did most of the areas overstay their welcome. The thing with horror is that you do get desensitized after awhile. Something that Blooper doesn't seem to get.
Also, I didn't like some minor characterization changes.

i think it was only good because it was built on the bones of SH2 and they had Masahiro Ito practically babysitting them the whole time. i think the SH1 remake will be similarly okay provided Ito is just as involved, but there's little doubt in my mind that if they were tasked with making a fully original title without any oversight from Konami or Team Silent oldheads it would be as mediocre as all their other games.

also the game was way too focused on combat, so you had little time to really soak in and enjoy the vibe the game had. probably my biggest complaint about it and biggest worry for Silent Hill f. the nightmare sequence after the hospital in the town was visually and atmospherically great but it was hard to really enjoy it and soak it in when there were fucking mannequins around every corner, those get old fast.

Eddie is great in the remake, I agree that his characterization was improved. That scene when he put down the ice cream when James made (in his mind) an innocent comment actually tugged at my heart strings. As for Laura, she has a reason to hate James. For one thing, James doesn't know her, meaning he wasn't visiting Mary for a year that she and Laura were friends. She's a smart kid, she understands that's fucked up and that it makes Mary sad. I liked James too. That scene with the whiskey was very well done. My only gripe is that he would even consider leaving the town without Mary.
As for Maria, I actually really liked what they did with her in the remake. She's fighting for her life, using every opportunity to lure James away from his goal, trying out every manipulation tactic in the book. And in the other park, I forget its name, we see the romantic side to her that we only really get to see in the Born from a Wish scenario. My only complaint is that the voice actress flubbed the prison scene.

Umineko goes even further in exposing some of the horrible stuff Japan was doing during the war and it is less popular however it still has a manga, anime, and theater production (that's still ongoing).
So I don't think it's a taboo subject in fiction.
