I love E33, for the record, but it's already been topped by MKW. Well, and Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition, the actual game of the year, but that's a remake of a 2015 game. Nobody is going to offer up a Mario Kart game for Game of the Year even though it's one of the most popular vidya franchises of all time and more than deserves the title. Even if the game released for $50 (technically it did with the bundle) it'd still not earn GotY.

That leaves Metroid Prime 4, Expedition 33, Yakuza Pirates, Death Stranding 2, and DK Bananza in the running for this year. Of those, I'm betting on E33 or MP4.

Reminder GOTY is meaningless after 2020. One of the top 10 worst games of all time, up there with Big Rigs Over the Road Racing and Atari ET, won GOTY. There's no recovering from that.

To put it into perspective, that'd be like if the Ford Pinto won Car of the Decade.

I feel like if KCD2 had come out after e33 it would've been the frontrunner. The way people talked about it, the specific things they highlighted about it, even the way it (deliberately or not, doesn't really matter) moved away from the right winger segments of the first game's fanbase, the way people praised its systems and quest narratives, and the fact that like Sandfall, those guys are also technically a AA team, I think it easily would've taken the wind out of e33's sails had it just launched after it and not before.

It's OK, deals with escapism as a coping mechanism, the characters are what elevate the story since they feel more "realistic".

Combat is turn based with QTEs for both attack and defense, level design is mostly linear with a few detours with rewards and challenges, overworld map has a bunch of optional areas once you unlock enough traversal abilities. It shares the biggest flaw that most game with QTEs in combat do, fights can't be super quick due to needing to give players enough time to see and react to animations and button prompts in order to properly attack/defend, so it can feel like it is dragging at times, particularly at places with a lot of enemies. Personally, by Act 3 i was souring on it already, so i just did a few optional stuff and beat the final boss, didn't really feel like doing everything
