I think that's just a problem with modern videogame story pacing. How much happens in the first five hours of FF7 compared to most newer games? Cloud bombs two reactors, falls through the roof of a church, escorts a girl to Wall Market, infiltrates the Don's mansion, falls into and escapes the sewer, returns to the starting town, climbs a tower, watches that starting town get destroyed, scales a wall to get to the enemy HQ, fights his way to the top floor, fights the new CEO, and then drives a motorcycle out of the city. All in about five hours.

I wonder if they could pull a revised edition for the whole trilogy, for example you could perfectly remove 4 chapters of remake, then add ps1 cgi models (like re2r with pixel leon and claire) and try to revamp the combat as turn based as an option.
Maybe kinda like FFXIII where characters are constantly moving on their own

9R or any other remake should be easier though since they are not tied by 2 popular love interests (if you do 10 hours with Aerith you must do 10 hours with Tifa too situation)

Im enjoying the game a lot but something about the world feels so soulless. I think it's to do with the over use of prefab assets and npcs. There is no coherent aesthetic for most of the world and none of it really feels like a place that might really exist.

Playing it also constantly makes me feel sad that we will never get a faithful remake. Squenix would rather just degrade final fantasy into a series of mid action games for some reason.

I agree, at first I just finished playing the remake and then continued with Rebirth. I found that the battle scenes seemed to deteriorate as it became open world, but with the improved battle system and variety of scenes, I liked it more than the first part.
