Superstars honestly isn't that bad at all and the level design is good most of the time. But I've also played through it multiple times, the main story at least, so I've adjusted. Rebuying this motherboard instead of trying to RMA it again out of concerns over missing the deadline (which is very soon, if it's even taken as a valid claim given I'm trying to RMA something a a year after I received an RMA board in the first place), even though buying another one forced me to spend more since it's out of print now, all in the name of taking one last stab at doing my Sonic PC properly.

It's always a grey area because fan works in question aren't technically allowed to receive any revenue. Like, an artist, by law, isn't really allowed to offer commissions based on protected IPs (someone being paid to draw Pokemon when that said someone isn't apart of TPC). Some companies like Nintendo will smack down fan games in the course of protecting their IPs, while companies like Sega will be just fine even if the project makes little pennies, just not a lot to attract attention (like locking said fan game behind a paywall of $20).
To many big companies, it would just be waste of time to go after some artist on DA or Tumblr when there are bigger fish to fry, like the current lawsuit being filed by Disney/Universal against Midjourney.

Frontiers is about what already exists, it isn't actually saying anything new. Same for Shad Gen, same for Sonic Gens. It isn't going to swing for the fences and take bold risks that might not pay off. An idea as wild as Shadow being a fucking alien whose biological father is Satan would never be in Shadow Gens if it hadn't already been established.

The series has been firmly jacking itself off for years now. It's too self obsessed, too corporate, too fandom aware to just do its own thing.

Lost World is just as creatively bankrupt as the other examples. It's "new", but having "new" things isn't intrinsically creative. They exist solely for marketing. They do not exist for the story or the themes or any actual ideas, they were just pushed because Sonic Team wanted to make Sonic more like Mario.

The issue isn't if new stuff is in a game. It's if a game has a creative voice and makes things for the purpose of that voice. Games like Unleashed and Shadow and SA2 take fucking wild swings, but that's because those things help the ideas they want to get across. The fuck does Frontiers have to say? What does Sage actually add here besides giving Eggman something to dote on?

It's not like Professor Pickle was worth a damn, but his existence comes from an attempt to give a specific mood and presentation to a story about the world as a whole and our cultures. Sonic stopped really making stories that happened to be Sonic and put brand identity first and foremost. The ancients aren't shit and their identity is irrelevant to Frontiers' story. At its core, that game is just about vaguely examining the existing cast, it's stuck on itself.

Yeah, Frontiers is mostly just introspection as you say, and as a chapter in a continuing story doesn't offer much other than another thing for Sonic to deal with.
The elements of the Sonic series from game to game continue to be incongruous, but that's usually never the focus because as you say the goal is to push a product to market, and let the product work in isolation.

The purpose of the Ancients was to explain how the emeralds first got to earth and the main purpose of Cyberspace which was to hold memories and as a jail for The End, Sage was created by eggman to research and document what exactly Cyberspace is in turn through out he game Eggman grows attached to Sage, Sage also gets attached to eggman via Sonic showing compassion for his friends, through the notes of eggman we also even more stuff about Cyberspace.
