As much as I hold against BotW: Nuts and Bolts for merely existing I would say it's merely a symptom. Zelda truly lost the plot with Wind Waker's rushed development. That game's design and reception set off a ripple effect that we're still seeing today, first in the increasingly linear and constrained direction of the decade's worth of games that succeeded it, and now the subsequent overcorrection of that direction after one game (A Link Between Worlds) arguably got close to getting it right.
