2 is closer to the first game, with some improvements and some overcorrections from the first game. I found the post game levels to be significantly easier than the first game and beat each of the final boss on my first attempt.
One of the things the first two games have over the latter entries, in my opinion, is atmosphere and weight to what story is offered. In 5, for example, it's pretty hard to take the labyrinth seriously as a threat when you have the innkeeper just hanging around having a picnic on floor 5 or the shopkeeper solo running the second stratum. With all the quirky explorers in the tavern/labyrinth, warping directly to any floor, and the general lack of difficulty processing, I had a hard time buying into the idea that any other explorers were able to get past the second or third stratum.
The first games presented it as a legitimately dangerous place that people risked their lives to conquer. Dialogue was scarce, but well presented. Paired with the comparatively higher difficulty of those first games, I believed it.
