Huge spider crawled out of my shoe the other day, way bigger than the ones I let live in the porch. Carried him outside and he jumped from his perch and booked it.
Had a singular large moth land on me and not want to leave my shoulder after coming inside unexpected. Two days, wouldn’t take the bait to go outside. Moths live without mouths so they can only breed or die in few days. Felt bad to lead it astray

I love tarantulas. I own 30 tarantulas. They're so cute and fluffy.
I just killed anything that wasn’t a cellar spider/daddy long legs. They have such a webbing advantage with their long legs that they’ll just act as a defensive wall killing other spiders. It’s been years since I’ve seen anything other than a wandering hobo spider.

Sometimes common house spiders are mistakingly referred to as such as well.
There was a whole episode of myth busters about this and embarrassingly they tested the wrong creature entirely.
The myth was busted from the start because harvestmen have no venom, or hollow fangs to deliver it for that matter.

>>713521140I'm sure one day we'll discover a carnivorous plant with the capacity to inject toxins into its prey.
one time i was on a really remote and poorly maintained hiking trail and had to climb this incredibly steep and narrow path up a hill lined with small ~10ft skinny sapling trees on either side. there were an insane amount of webs drawn across the path and there was no other way up so i decided to man up and go through. literally never had an experience so uncomfortable in my life - it was straight up fear factor shit. hundreds or thousands of spiders immediately fell all over me. literally more than i could count; like ants. felt them crawling under my shirt and through my clothes for literal hours afterwords.

>>713521140Isn't the difference that poisons are passively delivered through like consumption or touch while venoms are delivered by scratches or bites so things like nettles are technically venomous because they use spines? Am I misremembering my biology lessons?

>>713521471they were very small spiders. i think it was more that their fangs would've been too short to pierce my skin than any benevolence on their part. it was just the sheer number of them and that crawling sensation under my shirt (they entered down the back of my neck because they dropped from above) that made me so uncomfortable.
>>713521496I'm from Europe and I've never seen a house centipede. Then again I've not seen something worse either.

toxic = bacteria
poisonous = plant
venomous = animal

>>713521536Venom is used for predation while poison is a defense mechanism. It's why poison dart frogs are called the way they are. Though venom can also be used defensively, like for bees.
>>713521781Isn't it poisonous if you try to eat it and you get sick and venomous if it needs to bite you for you to get sick?
>>713521662i'm jealous. they are very regular visitors where i live in the US northeast. so regular that i sometimes even see them skittering across the sidewalk when i walk my dog at night. lived with them my whole life and they still startle the fuck out of me everytime they bolt out of cover.
>>713521927I'm ESL and in my language we don't do that distinction, everything is "poison", no matter where it comes from or how it's applied, because after all, they're all toxic substances, so who fucking cares?
>>713521927>Learn there's actual poisonous snakes that get the toxins from ingesting frogs
>>713490995>spoilerfucking share it now
>>713521781If a toxic substance is absorbed through the skin or is ingested, then its a poison. If it injected as part of an attack, then it is a venom.
>>713521382I was outdoors doing nighttime security shit and felt a bite on my ankle and then something crawling out of my pantleg so I shined a light and it was a centipede scurrying away down the sidewalk into the grass
>>713522031>so who fucking caresI understand but it's still good to have a distinction between them so you have a better idea of what is going on.
>>713522108>If it injected as part of an attack, then it is a venom.So the spitting cobra is not venomous, but poisonous?

>>713522327ants are huge assholes, im not surprised. ive never been bitten by a spider or a centipede but ive been bitten by like 8 varieties of ants. doesn't seem to matter if they're the size of a pinhead or slightly larger than a grain of rice: if they're in a position to clamp you, they go for it.

>>713521496I live in brazil and have never seen a house centipede.
And I don't think I've ever seen anything worse than them. The shit I usually see are roaches, spiders, geckos and ants.
>>713523558>I live in brazil>And I don't think I've ever seen anything worse than themmy macaco, you guys have spiders the size of your whole hand over there. house centipedes are about as long as two segments of your finger and half as wide.
>>713523737But those spiders aren't bad though?
>>713522186No it's venomous. The spitting cobra spits its venom into your eyes, it's not absorbed through the skin or ingested. It's a bit semantic I'll admit, and it can still inject the venom into you directly via bite.
i remember going on vacation to the dominican republic and there were these spiders that were so big that their footsteps were audible while they were running on the wall or ceiling above you. fucking hate it. had one drop on me in the shower and ended up getting into a shouting battle with it totally naked
>>713521496Argensimian here, most places without centipedes have alacranes (small scorpions) that hide in the worst places ever (like your shoes) and kill you instantly if they sting you

>>713523759it comes down to preference then man lol. i don't like either bug but if i had to choose between hand-sized spiders and fingertip-sized centipedes when neither one was actually physically dangerous, id choose the centipedes.
>>713524025>I see a single tarantula in my houseyea see this i wouldn't be able to handle. what the fuck do you even do with a spider that big? squishing it is like squishing a fucking mouse - there's going to be guts everywhere.
>>713519410pic not related, a tiger would still be terrifying even if he's relaxed
>>713524202>what the fuck do you even do with a spider that big?Eat or get eaten
>>713523980Breathing makes it a poison, I guess I should have added inhalation to the poison list. Like the spitting cobra example, it' counts as a venom if its forcefully injected into the body (either from a wound or into a mucous membrane like the eyes) as part of an attack. If you want to be really nitpicky about it and shove poison dart frogs in your eyes then you can call that a poison.
