I figured out the main reason for why Crash Bandicoot is dead. Look at these characters for a moment. They are fucking ugly. Ask yourself would you or millions of others want to play a game where the characters all look like undesirable, abhorrent skinwalkers? Mario has cute, appealing characters and designs and Sonic blatantly copies Disney and anime. But look at these disgusting excuses for characters, sickly caricatures devoid of charm or personality. People do judge a book by its cover and unless the designs of these characters change, this series is never gonna take off.

Crash was never timeless, people like to say he was inspired by Looney Tunes but that isn't entirely true, he was more akin to Tiny Tunes and Animaniacs which themselves were poorly derivative of classic cartoons. He was never going to be a character who could endure through the times like Mario or Sonic, just appreciated by those who were there for it and the occasional weirdo autist from newer generations. I'll always love this motherfucker though.

Von Clutch is the only ugly one here. Back then they looked good in these cutscenes but all the other weird characters in this game didn't stick. Crash has designs inspired by Looney Tunes or spinoff media from the Looney Tunes like Animaniacs or Roger Rabbit. They're all meant to look wacky or like caricatures of people or animals not saccharine or generic. Which is why its so hard for people to make an OC in Crash's world or for devs to make new characters. You need to be a talented cartoonist drawing inspiration from the classics.

But weren't both for the Titans games, CTTR, Wrath of Cortex, some of the handhelds and IAT. Its again a different flavor of mediocrity. They could've turned Crash into Scott Pilgrim with IAT and made the gameplay into something inspired by God of War and it would've alienated fans just as much as Nu Tawna.

With Sonic people expect one thing: the hedgehog goes fast. You actually need to be braindead to mess that up even by Sega's standards. Yeah the levels might be ugly or boring, it might have some new gimmick like werehogs or playing as other characters and the plot is diet Evangelion, but if you stick to Sonic running and characters retaining a consistent appearance, you can't lose.
