Genuine question, not trying to be a dick. How do adults, grown ass men, still play Nintendo games? It's one thing if you're a woman or in your early teens, or if you're playing with your kids. But being 25+ and playing such simple games that are clearly made for children is just weird to me. I really only play stuff like DOOM wads, old point and click adventures, Tarkov, Dwarf Fortress, Factorio, Paradox games, etc

No, it's one man running from the left to the right in a platformer that defined an entire genre. It's historical relevance to gaming is extremely important, as are its sequels in Super Mario World, then you saw games like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time revolutionize 3D games.

It's not childish to play any of those games, because games are meant to played, regardless of age. Is PacMan also for children? never stopped tons of boomers from hanging around arcades and putting in thousands of quarters to play pinball, galaga, etc etc. Games have always existed. They're there to have fun.

DOOM was also a game made for children, as were point and click games. Factorio and Dwarf Fortress are more complex, but that still only serves a pretty niche audience of gamers. There's all sorts of games for all sorts of tastes. Are racing sims for children because they're less complex than flying sims? Let's just pretend and say that Microsoft Flying Sim is the only game for adults, because flying a plane is what big boys do! That's not very fun is it. So stop taking yourself so seriously and just play games. Even the "mature" ones are played by annoying little zoomers and children who wish they were adults so badly. I'll be fair and say some games like splatoon are clearly trying to draw the 20+ crowd, though it has other reasons you should avoid it. Smash as well. Zelda seems to be split between the BotW and toybox style 2D games. Everything else is unapologetic baby slop. The new Marios are especially bad.

Most Nintendo games have more mechanical depth than your average Ubislop game or popular cinematic game.
For instance how is a Mario Game more simple than a GTA game. Or assassins creed.
Compare the number of actions and mehanicks in those games to the amount of actions and mehanicks in above mentioned games.
If Mario looks like GTA but played exactly the same would you say its now not a simple game.

Seams to me you judge these games as simple not based on the actual game part of the game but the fact the games are designed to be appealing to all ages.

The truth is childish looking 3D platformers are really hard to play past a certain age. I still love and respect Mario 64 equally from gameplay and historical importance perspectives. Legendary stuff. But I was young when I played it. As an adult I tried playing the so called GOTY Astrobot, dropped it after an hour. Cute ass platformer game are just not meant for adults. It’s like Disney, yeah it’s extremely well made but it’s for kids. As an adult you might like a movie or two here and there. If I feel like picking up a game about playing Tennis or Racing, I'm far more likely to go for something that doesn't require me to actually learn how to drive a car.

I know a lot of men do this and I get it, it's validating, but if you don't get that validation from games that are just hard or just simulations then why would you play them? I am 31, and I still play Nintendo games. Keep in mind though, I am predominantly a PC gamer and usually play RPG/Strategy/Action games. However, Nintendo games are generally a pretty good pallet cleanser. Their flagship titles are almost always very high quality (Odyssey, BotW/TotK/Mario Kart/Metroid) and I really don't know how you could possibly not enjoy your time spent with them as long as you like video games in general. Part of it is nostalgia, as I grew up with an SNES/N64, but I still think even without that the games are enjoyable.
Now, it is important to note that the more easy/babby games I definitely do not have an interest in. Modern Pokemon, Kirby (though I heard the 3D game actually had some challenging parts), Yoshi, etc. Those games are all too easy that they become boring. So I mainly just play Mario/Zelda/Metroid.

most of the time, nintendo hides some depth to their games. mario odyssey has some very comfy movement tech for example

I play what ever the fuck in the comfort of my bedroom, dickhead. If I want to play DKC, I plug in my snes. If I want to play Crash, I plug in my PSX. If I want to play something to fall asleep to, I boot up a gameboy and play Pokemon.

i'd give it a pass if they still were good, otherwise i agree with you. nothing wrong with whipping out donkey kong country, mario 64 or any older zelda once in a while, but nothing in the last 10 to maybe even 15 years is worth your time besides a gem here and there. most of nintendo is extremely streamlined now
