You need to download several mods to make it playable.
The experience is
>start with no guns
>encounters every 2 steps
>ALL encounters throughout the ENTIRE game are 8-10 enemies
>if anyone has a burst fire gun, you're dead
>any enclave patrols kill you on the first turn (they have max combat special so always go first)
>if you deviate one inch from the intended playthrough (which you're not told), you will not get real guns until you go to the bottom of the map, at which point you will get all endgame weapons and armour

The game's writing is political, disjointed, and hostile. The quest dialogue is mostly unfinished and the one major mod for the game has had fans complete the cut content of only a few of them, and replace some maps with better ones such as the ship's hold no longer being a shitty room.

If you liked Fallout 1, you might find yourself hating Fallout 2 because it's by different people, has a different philosophy, and plainly does not want to be played.

I mean obviously. But with 2 there's a whole bunch of random quests unrelated to your main quest you can do in most of the areas, while in the first one there's a bunch of areas that are barely used with possibly a quest hidden somewhere if you know where to look. Still 1 feels more cohesive overall as it's not just a bunch of random references stringed together.

Forgive me but isn't it only Fallout 1 where you're given a 10mm (with or without small guns tagged?) and in 2 you HAVE to reach Trapper Town to find your first gun?
I can't remember if the sharpened spear is a restoration project SPECIAL check (and a check that you aren't a sexy man), or if you can do that base game.

I do know that healing powder fucking sucks and if you're a melee build, it's good early but you basically get trapped mid-late with the only weapon upgrades being a hidden dialogue baseball bat and... I can't remember if the super sledge has decent AP requirements or I used something else or I graduated to one of the bullshit LMGs that delete most enemies.

Of course it is. Fallout 1 and 2 is honestly the few CRPGs everyone can get into. I suggest some mods to make the experience even better:

For Fallout 1 get Fallout Fixt as it will fix a ton of bugs, add children back into the game (Steam has some weird European-American version and not the original American version) and in general make the game a lot smoother.

For Fallout too, grab the UPU (Unofficial Patch Updated). If you want it, you can also grab the Restoration Patch. If you do get the restoration patch, I really love this mod: Restoration Project - Talking Heads Addon
Found at:
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout2/mods/45

It adds over 160+ animated talking head portraits to various NPCs, some of them with actual voice acting. It takes an already fantastic game and makes it even better. You only need UPU, Restoration Project + The talking heads mod really, really, makes a difference in my opinion.

I remember that too, the first guns you can find are in Klamath. Pretty close, but still a little bit annoying. In one thread I saw someone posting that one of the tribals gives you a gun in the starting village but if I had to guess that's from a restoration(?) modpack.

I still can't believe the tutorial's default way to complete it is to steal the key, because theft tests are based on weight and it's a weightless item, and it's not actually a combat test because only unarmed builds that haven't taken much damage from the giant ants and poisonous scorpions can fight him.

I did like reading one story online about someone critting him on their first playthrough and the entire village being hostile.

I can agree mostly, I think Spyro 2 would be the better game if you didn't need to backtrack to levels because certain orbs require later powerups. I love Spyro 1 because you can enter any level, complete it, and move onto the next until you're at the very end, but Spyro 2 I think has a better mix of pure collectathon platforming and minigames than say Banjo-Tooie had.

Well
>fight unarmed
>steal key
>speech tagged and Int 4+
invalidates combat builds that are fine (or die just as fast) but just aren't for pugilists. Or it would invalidate them if it wasn't for theft being guaranteed.

I always found it ironic the speech check is about how you'll talk anyone down in the wasteland... and... yeah... they will all be talked down just like the Master...

>back up 3 hexes
Never thought of that, but I also remember missing like it's X-COM and doing little damage when I did hit.

According to the wiki you're doing 1-2 damage per punch if you're not Agi 6 and at 55% Unarmed (which you can start with, but I don't know if there's enough XP to level up in the temple if you don't meet the requirement at character creation).
If I recall correctly there are two skill trainers in Arroyo and another in Klamath who teach Unarmed but only if you're... under 55%... so yeah. Game feels weird with how it wants you to go melee from character creation but rewards you if you don't.

Not really.
The original Fallout games are massively overrated.
They control like shit, play like shit, are horrifically balanced, and isn't nearly the 'le complex' RPG people claim it is. Also the quests are really simplistic and lame for the most part. Fallout 3 has more dynamic and multi-faceted quests than either 1 or 2.

Also 2 sucks since it basically forced you to play melee for the first third of the entire game.

>wonders why the game is shit when he runs south and gets mowed down by a bunch of end game enemies
When I played I went Klamath, Den, Redding, New Reno.
I didn't know I was supposed to clamber over mountains because Fallout 1 says you shouldn't travel on rough terrain.

This sent me to some of the worst places and encounters I could be given before I could get a real weapon... and even then New Reno is the only first real gun shop but you don't get full access until after you do some quests if you don't mind bad karma.

I mean really,
>burst fire weapon damage
>stims rarer + more expensive + trading more harsh than 1
>first aid/doctor was nerfed
>vic will crit you more in the back than he'll hit the enemy before he's level 6 or whatever
>burst fire weapon damage
>golden geckos are no joke, aren't rare, and you need to clear a cave of them before you can pay for the bullets and health used to kill their encounters
>spitting plant in the elder's garden can fuck a low melee skill level 1/2 player up
>burst fire 10mm SMGs and FALs appear right outside the Den
>fire geckos are outside Redding, they open their mouth, the world disappears in fire
I hit both the exploding cow and waste dump special tiles just walking south of the Den. The game fucking hates the player and it's not funny.

>enclave are too strong, waaaah
Go between the NCR and Broken Hills. They spawn there with guns I don't think they even have in the military camp. You have to reload a save because they all go first due to initiative mechanics. You cannot just book it, say sorry, pay them off, anything.
>it's stupid to get all the powerful guns immediately!
It really is when without being a Made Man, you can only get stuff that works for content at the top of the map, but you have to cross the middle and bottom to get to... the one gun trader in the whole game... who sells the best guns in the whole game... and it's not a progression, it's just "Here's everything!"

it's got really shit dialogue (anyone that says otherwise hasn't actually read it) and the combat encounters have way more enemies than fo1, meaning that each fight takes 2-3 times as long where you're just watching gecko after gecko walk across the screen
a few settlements have cool stories, a few settlements are endless cringe compilations, but overall, idk hard to recommend, i'd just recommend fo1 it's a much better game

>>713562264
if you have a very specific set of stats it's borderline impossible to finish the game so that's something, can't remember what the check was but there's a check that breaks if i think int is <4 but science is >70 or something like that

>>713563071
>Just lies all the way down
bro there is no shit you actually enjoy getting an encounter with 8 geckos that pose you absolutely 0 threat, but you need to spend 4 minutes watching them walk across the screen

The game is harder than Fallout 1 and is intended for the player who already knew the mechanics
>stims rarer + more expensive + trading more harsh than 1
A good thing since you can just rest to get health, there’s no time limit to worry about here. Trading being harsher is good, in 1 once you killed the Khans and looted their stuff, you didn’t have to worry about anything for the rest of the game
>first aid/doctor was nerfed
Just rest nigger
>burst fire weapon damage
Ennemies rarely use burst if you’re not close to them, so just shoot from a distance
>vic will crit you more in the back than he'll hit the enemy before he's level 6 or whatever
Never had this problem and Vic only get level 6 in the end game, dunno what you’re talking about
>golden geckos are no joke, aren't rare, and you need to clear a cave of them before you can pay for the bullets and health used to kill their encounters
Bullshit. If you do the rat caves first and do most of the things in Klamath, you have enough bullets or money to buy them
>spitting plant in the elder's garden can fuck a low melee skill level 1/2 player up
Don’t use melee, use unarmed. With training, you can get it up to 55 without spending a point in Arroyo
>burst fire 10mm SMGs and FALs appear right outside the Den
Pretty sure they only have hunting rifles
>fire geckos are outside Redding, they open their mouth, the world disappears in fire
Yeah no shit Redding is for midgame players

>the elder ask you to go see Vic
>once you liberate Vic, he tell you about Vault City
>set the route for Vault City
>stumble upon Modoc on your way there
Do you need the game to outright tell you that ennemies are weaker on the way there than on the way to Redding ?
In fact it does, since you can’t do the Sheriff quests if you’re not level 10 and the Wendigo mine will rape you even in the mid game

Sequence says no.
Enemies doing a double turn after initiating says no.

You can initiate Sneak and then travel on the world map. But you start each encounter placed in the middle of the map and are often surrounded.
You also have your companions (who are not optional) running head first into death.

>>713573000
I think I remember Vic saying it exists but nothing else. Again, the mountains are a "Don't go this way" discouragement and the path of least resistance on the map is to go to Redding and then New Reno. You can at least find them both a stone's throw from each other.
The game's bad.

You can. Maybe it’s a restoration project thing so I’ll give you the benefit out the doubt.
If you can’t set the route via the little list on the right of the screen, you can do the very hard thing that is clicking on the location with your mouse

>I'm fine with fighting endless golden geckos, I have all the dollars in the wooorld before skinning
>ignore an entire skill, use this other skill which you need to level and have good Agi for, this is a good game btw
>I don't check the encounter lists before claiming you don't get brrrrt right outside the Den

You could beat half these games in a single sitting each (which is fine).
Being into video games didn't used to be a reductionist hobby, people WANTED more good shit to play.
You did not win by reducing your repertoire to the bare essentials. That just meant you didn't get to have as much fun.

im pretty sure you can if an NPC tells you the location of it and marks it on the map, eg the drug gang you can help take over the church can tell you where they traffic drugs to and mark New Reno, Redding and some other places on your map and you can click the sidebar thing to go there

Lmao I hardly, I just say it's there if you suck at the game and want a cheap healing option. Yeah healing skills are useless, already were in Fallout 1
>why would enemies burst fire you on turn one of every encounter? I definitely played Fallout 2
They dont always do that no. Sucks to be you I guess
>I gave vic 200% small guns in my mod so he'd not kill me or sulik, why can't you?
Lmao this is pure cope
>I'm fine with fighting endless golden geckos, I have all the dollars in the wooorld before skinning
I do actually, there's a shit ton of stuff to pick in Klamath
>ignore an entire skill, use this other skill which you need to level and have good Agi for, this is a good game btw
Yeah use the one you're better at. Shocking I know. And why would you play Fallout without high agility
>I don't check the encounter lists before claiming you don't get brrrrt right outside the Den
I just checked, they have desert eagles, 10mm and hunting rifles. They don't even have SMGs
>fire geckos are for midgame players, which is why their 18% crit chance that melts high endurance enclave power armor characters is sooooo midgame
That one sucks but once I arrive in Redding, I'm able to crit them in the eyes and avoid getting raped

You just suck at the game

lol, definitely not, Crpg fans overrate the fuck out of their mediocre janky ass games, never listen to anyone who claims to be a crpg fan, you are most likely going to get baited into playing garbage games, their taste is so atrocious and their personality is so obnoxious and shit, avoid contact at all costs.

I think there is a charm to those early era 3d games, texture work from talented artists was necessary to give the illusion of detailed environments which was a neat side effect of having limited power on those consoles. SNES platformers like DKC and Yoshi's Island pushed out some incredible visuals for how little they could work with which was just as impressive. All beautiful games to me
