All units in the game are functionally the same aside from 3 factors. Their innate aptitudes for certain types of races, their unique skill, and the skills they can natural learn by leveling up the unit outside of runs, and their bonuses to stat growh. (Every unit has a total of +30% stat growth that is distributed amongst all of the stats. One unit can have +20% to speed and +10% to stamina for example)

This means that, generally speaking, you can just roll on who you want rather than what's "meta".

For what it's worth, amongst the launch units, Oguri Cap is the best multi purpose unit you can get while Teio is the best medium unit you can get

The skill the umas have change the variables that happen during a race. Results of a race can be calculated beforehand by the engine, which is how they enable the race skip button during your trainings.

This is the spurt period, the game have visual cues when this happen, and it depends on both relevant stats and skills to affect the spurt.

In all honesty, hardly matters that much since the first human rights tier banner wasn't available at launch unless they do something different in Global.
You want to look out for this speed card and roll as many copies of her as possible, she should release within a month of launch.

The irony is that she doesn't become broken until max limit break, but owning her will allow you to gradually limit break her over time and allow you to eventually borrow other support cards instead of her. She will also carry your account for a pretty long time.

A support card deck is made up of 6 cards; 5 of your own and 1 borrowed from your followed list (basically a friends list, except you can "follow" people without them needing to "accept" a request. They can still choose to remove you from following them for any reason however).
The staple deck of the entire game will generally run 2 Speed cards and 1 Wisdom card. The last three slots get filled by 1 Scenario support card, which won't be relevant until later training scenarios, and two filler depending on what kind of races you are training your Uma Musume for.

The best options from the starting lineup with the longest term standing power are Super Creek Stamina and Fine Motion Wisdom.
They're good cards, but nowhere near human rights tier like Kitasan Black Speed. If you can reroll an account starting with one of them that's cool, they will give you an edge in training. But you aren't really missing out on that much without them.

I hate my tastes in this instance.
I like the anime, I like the designs, I like the idea of over-the-top horse racing and management combined with cute girls and mild dating sim mechanics.
However I genuinely can't stomach gacha and other mobile-tier practices. The overwhelming greed just sickens me. It could have been a great singleplayer or regular multiplayer game where you earn all the stuff during gameplay.
