Forts always have staves, and crystal staves have shattering crystal on their R1 by default, which is at worst a super functional spell, it's the closest thing I've found to reliable for her. One crystal staff upgraded to purple, and just hunting passives on whatever the fuck other weapons, starlight shards, and any relevant defensive passive upgrades you can get usually make for a solid run even with weird shit like constant colossal weapon drops. A bow with an element on it is also super handy if you want to use her cocktail spells and can't find a good spell of an element (holy comes to mind)
Revenant you also want to start with the wraith calling bell as a fallback - super FP efficient, decent damage, decent enough tracking/range that it's reliable, pairs well with any 'triggers when walking' stuff. If you don't have that, her claw is also fine damage, and is probably the best melee weapon in the game for reviving. A relic that changes its element to a boss weakness helps, and nabbing a greatshield somewhere is pretty reliable on her.
No idea on Ironeye, haven't really played him much. Starting with bleed on your bow and just upgrading the starter bow is probably pretty good.

Just stack passives that improve your spells (cast time/cost reductions, attack power increases) and hit the guaranteed staff spawn points along your route. Between killing bosses, opening chests, and the guaranteed spawns you will never really get screwed out of a decent spell. All you need is ONE good spell, the rest of your weapon slots should be taken up by good passives to boost the fuck out of it.

Guardian is too support-oriented but he's also alright if you know what you're doing. Even Recluse and Revenant can be fine, but they're much more build-dependent, whereas the three I listed really just need to get one decent weapon (and it can be their starter).

Ironeye has low dps on a dummy but that doesn’t matter when the key to literally any fight is uptime. Ironeye can consistently hit an enemy and also apply status for so much longer than any character. This includes casters as they have slow tracking projectiles and resource management. Ironeye has neither.
Raider R1 will do like 5x more than Ironeyes R1 sure but watch ever boss jump around the arena out of melee range. Ironeye is weaker because he has to be. He gets to hot the boss more and as a result does more damage over the course of a prolonged fight. This is doubly so if he isn’t taking aggro.

From a lore and story perspective yes, but having game knowledge is cert helpful from the base game.
With that said, I think the learning curve probably would be the same for alot of people given the great change in thought processes with how you tackle a run.
I think would be “perfect” for you, to sate the gameplay craving while also not feeling left out any story or character revelations.
It’s also cheap so that helps.
It’s a veritable mod. Run around a map collecting rng loot to figt rng bosses, although the final boss you know so you build for it specifically. Locations are semi randomized and certain locations can have fewer or more versions on a map (i.e. 1-3 camps, 1-3 mages rise, 3-8 evergaols)
The fun is just the combat and the character unique combat. Very little meta progression. Nightlors final bosses are unique and challenging. It’s cool to see what ideas FS came up with.

We need a second FTH character.
Recluse is just a better incant user than Rev and Rev just doesn’t bring anything to the table that other characters do, in terms of completing a run.

Well that’s exactly it: Guardian is a better support character in that regard.
He kinda sucks too but his benefits are also Rev’s. Easy trash clearer, good revive, can hold to make an area invincible and also heal people in it.
Rev’s summons can hold aggro (for a time), he is also the aggro bit, with the benefit of (some) guard counters.
Rev has better range but then so does Recluse and Ironeye.


She’s what you want if you build her as a support character AND also want access to FTH stuff in the same package and those aspects can be solved by just having people pick separate but better characters

There has been one(1) time in My 100+ clears where the revive came in handy to help with the win. If there’s ever been a triple bar double ko at a nightlord it was already over bc we had it at 40% and were gonna job later.

Most of my successes only get people to 1-2 bars (sometimes none!). Every once in a while there’s a win when someone gets 3 bared. Most of these bosses are too hard with too much health and too few resources to slug it out over an extended period of time. The cracks in your team show early usually.

Really just depends on what you have and what your teammates are doing rather than being a hard and fast rule. If you have a great spell and passives to support it, yeah eat that shit like candy so that spell is being cast as often as possible. If your whole team only does magic damage and you're alternating casts with draws and throwing the pure magic cocktail, yeah shit is stupid. Drawing is worth it if both components are useful - FP recovery and building to a good spell is fine/efficient.
A lot of the time between her ult and useful draws I don't end up using any starlight shards even if I have them.

Wylder can use pretty much any melee weapon effectively and has the best mobility in the game, making him more forgiving with routing. Probably the easiest to solo with.
Ironeye's marking gives him what is effectively a super roll that also massively helps with his dps. Just get a relic that gives you two of those things and a relic that patches up his poor starting HP and you're good to go, is by far the best ranged character at actually keeping his distance and if you bother to actually learn how to get head shots you'll instantly be better than 95% of other Ironeye players.

Those two are pretty far above the others as far as solo play goes, Executor is probably third but can have issues with getting around the map and completing objectives in a timely manner. I don't think Raider is particularly great, his special moveset is clunky, his ult is pretty low damage, and his defensive utility is pretty poor outside of "just tank the hit bro". Revenant isn't as bad as you'd probably think, her early game is actually really good but she has a really tough late game once her summons hp starts getting eclipsed by enemy damage output. Recluse and Duchess have really shitty early games and rely heavily on good drops. Guardian isn't even particularly great in a group so I'm not sure why you'd consider him for solo play.

I always see bad revenants get the big boys killed immediately then are forced to have 10% summon uptime the rest of the fight because they burned through their high value HP, but most of the time I can keep full uptime during a nightlord fight even solo (depending on the nightlord that is). It's also why, while having a melee weapon is important for FP preservation you still want to play at range as much as possible so you have the leeway to pull out the harp and manage them. Managing their HP is just as important as managing your own FP

And it's not like I'm always doing it, they have health regen because they're meant to take hits to give you openings to dump high damage incants unmolested. Since it's regen over time you just have to lower the health expenditure enough so that they're more in line with each other, not be their guardian angel.
There's other strategies that help, like since sebastian is immobile you can intentionally set him up at a distance while you fight the nightlord and while you hold the aggro, then ult and start dumping incants whenever it finally switches targets and you'll have like 20 seconds of big dick damage before the ult runs out and then he dies and you have to play more strategically again. If you want to fight with your summons out you can also intentionally move to flank with them so they're """less likely""" to get hit by attacks aimed at you and you also have better openings to harp b/c it's forced to turn to attack the summon. Also since resummoning resets their AI and they often attack immediately on summon, a quick resummon when they get targeted both conserves their HP and puts them straight back on offense.

Revenant's still not topping the tier list even when played right, it's just unlike the other chars she's bad only until you learn her intricacies. It's like a techy low tier in a fighting game, irredeemable dogshit but has a bunch of tricks that bring them up to par then feels 10x more fun to succeed with once you do because of, not in spite of, the steeper learning curve

Honestly the biggest tragedy is that From has never been able to make any shorthand for your Customizable PC as effectively as the Élite Knight Set in Dark Souls 1.
Not only is it a good looking traditional knight armor set with good coloration and non obstructive detail, but it was also easy to get in the early game, generic enought that while Oscar wore it it wasn't his and had a good defense/weight ratio.
And it payed off as "Guy in the Elite Knight Set" became the shorthand for the player character for the community.

Demons Souls had the Fluted Set, but the good looking version was gender locked
Dark Souls 2 had both Farram and Alva, but Farram leaned to far to "Warrior" instead of knight and was locked past the halfway point and Alva was behind having to upgrade the merchant while also having to share cultural space with Farram.
Bloodborne also had the Hunters set that worked
Dark Souls 3 had the Fallen Knight Set, which would of been perfect but the text about the former owner shitting the pants and its association with scrubs instead of the everyman held it back.
And Elden Ring had the Raging Wolf set which while doing better than DS2&3 again is locked halfway into the game behind a quest.

Meanwhile Nighreign by having multiple unique characters that bypasses this issue, on top of Wylder which is the perfect "John Nightreign" anyway.

The bird is insane during night boss fights as long as your willing to be patient and let the boss finish their combo as he just won't go down while also chipping the boss.
The secret is to not just tunnel vision on halberds, they are great when fighting knights but for anything bigger you want something with more omph or a status weapon.

His biggest weakness that his overall low dps means anything on the difficulty level of the Castle Sewer or higher is often a waste of time unless its like the last/second to last thing you do on night 2 before the boss.
But if you focus on doing stuff like gaols alongside softer targets on the map he can beat nighttlords solo easy at LV10-11 with some time.

Guardian's low damage and bad roll suck, but he can fuck up a bunch and still win through raw bulk.
Duchess has the fastest cast speed, Restage is free damage amp, her dodge is amazing, and she's good with dex weapons too. Surprisingly also more HP than Ironeye. Ult's lame, but sometimes gives you a cheese window.
Recluse does good damage and has a great dodge but dies to a breeze.
Only things Revenant has over Recluse to me are starting with a decent melee weapon and occasionally getting Sebastian to pull aggro so she can get a few extra spells off. There's less standout incants than sorceries, and few seals that guarantee anything good.

She's not that hard to play, even solo.
Just get the store relic that gives her healing on post damage attacks(it works with your spells, specially multihit ones like stars of ruin), then the Relic from the hard mode store that gives her a ton of FP just by collecting a few staves, and you'll be pretty tanky and have almost infinite FP to spam spells without having to constantly regenerate it with her skill.

Using Recluse's ability is fine when the boss runs away beyond the range of any spells, which happens quite often.
Since you can use it at any range it means free FP + a bit of damage while waiting for it to come back.

It's made even worse by the current "meta" of setting shifting earth to shrouded city and running that relic which gives you a stonesword key at the start and buffs ALL of your dmg for each evergaol you clear. First day, you're just making a mad dash between evergaols to stack up on that sweet, sweet dmg boost, and on the second day, you're clearing out noklateo. The way softcaps work means stats are worth less after 40 (and even less after 60).
The difference in dmg per hit between guardian and wylder using the same weapon could be made up for easily with just a few extra hits landed due to more uptime.
People still have very little understanding of how the game works.

Nightreign doesn't have softcaps, stat growths are linear here. Guardian has less than 2/3 the STR and STR-scaling weapon damage Raider does, even at lv15.
Similarly for uptime, Raider's skill and Wylder's relic-enhanced skill have stamina regen during their attacks, Guardian doesn't. But Guardian's high stamina and poise is a real merit compared to non-Raiders.

If you dodge while holding block, Guardian does a little shuffle and hunkers behind his shield. It basically gives you Barricade Shield (way higher guard power, bounces attacks, etc.) but drains your stamina a little bit while you're using it. If you know what you're doing with it you can just soak basically anything.

Duchess is not that hard solo. She has generous dodges and uses less stamina to attack. Just get any proc weapon (ideally frost and bleed) and just reprise when you get the procs to chunk bosses. She has a big FP bar too so if you get lucky you can abuse some of the better weapon arts like blood tax or classic elden ring cheese with hoarfrost stomp.

His ability to do damage is lower than any other character's. That's it - the objective is killing the boss, and he is (by himself) slow at it. He's incredibly valuable in a team setting, but by his own merits is worse at the objective than every other character. Sure he can do good damage if you find a good weapon art, but any other character with str/dex will do better with the same. You could say that being slower results in having more time to make mistakes and die, but he's also pretty easy once you get how his stance works and has the most HP so I don't really buy into that.

For the love of God, please Fromsoft, take this character/hero template into your next game, for fuck's sake PLEASE!

You can dodge any direction, and then while holding block you will be in a stance where Guardian is walking and your stamina is draining slowly. Lasts as long as you have stamina.

Raider is worse at the part of the game that isn't hard - Guardian is actually quite good at most non-boss stuff because of his skill and pretty fast heavy attack sweeps, and his skill can stunlock quite a few mid-bosses. But then you reach the Nightlord or even night bosses and Raider completely outshines him at everything other than his ult when your teammates are getting slaughtered. Does more stagger, can be more actively aggressive because of his skill, is really good at using Rally mechanics, basically the same hp pool in terms of 'how many times you can fuck up'. I prefer playing the bird for flavor (and my friends suck) but his str/dex could use a bit of a tweak upwards.
