His ability to do damage is lower than any other character's. That's it - the objective is killing the boss, and he is (by himself) slow at it. He's incredibly valuable in a team setting, but by his own merits is worse at the objective than every other character. Sure he can do good damage if you find a good weapon art, but any other character with str/dex will do better with the same. You could say that being slower results in having more time to make mistakes and die, but he's also pretty easy once you get how his stance works and has the most HP so I don't really buy into that.

Daily reminder Guardian is a good class and only shitters think otherwise

Tanky shieldbot, with aggro drawing on block
Windwhirl focused build
And then a guard counter focused build with thrusting attacks
