>Unreliable network issues/bad matchmaking, which is partially to do with Switch 1's weak network capabilities, but also shoddy netcode particularly at Splat 3's launch. The matchmaking is still pretty lopsided.

Now that being said Splatoon is extremely popular in Japan, and in general is Nintendo's 4/5th best selling franchise right now behind Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, and Animal Crossing. That's pretty crazy for a game that came out on the Wii U. I think it has potential to grow more, and it not being totally embraced by the mainstream is still fine at the end of the day, as the popular mainstream games right now are slop like fortnite, roblox, apex, GTA V, fifa, call of duty etc.

In Splatoon 1 they added a bunch of silly memes to the dialogue and rewrote a lot of dialogue in general.
Even the team-commands during the multiplayer were rewritten so that communication with foreign players was all scuffed.
"To me!" became "Come on!" and "Nice!" became "Booyah!". If an American player said "Come On!" with the intentions of rushing forwards, foreign players would instead see "To me!" and would retreat. Likewise if a foreign player wanted an American player to come to their specific location with "To me!", the American players would just see "Come on!" and maybe wouldn't get the hint.

And in Splatoon 2 they completely rewrote Marina's character in order to make her Marie2.0 instead of letting her be the Pearl simp she was actually written to be.

I remember how hard that the original was being talked up on the Wii U. Then I played it, and the thing I was looking forward to the most--being able to splat walls and run up them to get to better positions or to finesse on your enemy--was prevented by literal baby bumpers put all over the place.

I came around to the game eventually as I started to appreciate it for what it is, but I think a lot of people are stuffed by the fact that it is undeniably still designed for younger audiences first and foremost.

They somehow managed to get good movement, varied weapons and appealing characters whilst having something very stylishly distinct.
Just about every other current game with seasonal content is crammed full of DLC or other things. This one opts for a single expansion that doesn't divide the multiplayer playerbase.
Its only held back by the console not being strong enough and the network infrastructure. Things I really wish they'd fix up for the next game.
