I really don't see how they can make a new Smash Game. Option one full reboot with new mechanics and a third of the characters, everone has a bitchfit. Option 2 new game with all the characters, no way they can reasonably develop it without killing the director.

I see them pulling Smash Ultimate Deluxe with all previous DLC, a few new characters, and a new round of DLC. There's still a ton of shit they could add to it if they wanted as well.

They probably would have just dropped the "Everyone is Here" concept and did the usual. Some characters would have been cut and we would have had some more new fighters for the base roster. DLC would have had some veterans instead of everyone being new. They would have gotten the rights situation figured out before they actually started working on the game and would have adjusted the project plan.

If I had to choose one, it's a toss up between metal sonic, knuckes, or geno. Say what you will, but I really enjoyed smrpg as a kid, and think a glass cannon with some sort of timed hit mechanic would be really interesting if done right, and would contribute some cool music/ remixes
As for the former 2, I'm a older sonic fan, so although I can see why younger/ relatively newer fans would rather shadow as a secondary "sonic rep", I still like the original enemy/ rivalry. my discontent with mech controls from SA2 prevent me from wanting robotnik (I personally refuse to use the modern nomenclature, regardless of canon).
Metal sonic and knuckles would have similarities with sonic, yet could be different enough to feel justified.

Neither Sophitia or Misturugi really work for something like Smash. Siegfried is fine but he's not really iconic to the series. Nightmare is the closest to iconic, but I don't think his mobility would work.

Absolutely not. With Nintendo getting closer with bigger brands like Xbox, and Playstation allowing some of their smaller titles to head over to Switch, they're only going to go deeper. Now, do I think the next Smash will have 20 million 3rd party reps? Absolutely not, but without Sakurai, you lose a shit ton of potential with whatever deals they need to make. I heavily doubt SNK would've given Nintendo quite literally everything to use for Terry's pack if Sakurai wasn't on board. Same with Harada and Kojima in terms of just getting Snake and Kazuya in.
