The way I learned SS13 was playing jobs with little to no responsibility (Cargo Tech, Botanist, Jannie, Assistant), disabling antag rolls for myself and asking more experienced colleagues in whatever department I'm in how shit works, gradually moving onto more hectic roles as I got more familiarized with the game's mechanics.
The game is most fun if you learn how to roll with the punches, part of the appeal of Botanist specifically (for me at least) is accidentally blowing yourself and the department up from say, trying to genetically engineer apples to produce meth. And seeing the rest of the station scramble to fix it and figure out what the fuck happened.
