The early 2000's were an extension of the 90's, which were a reaction to the overly happy commerical 80's, which were a reaction to the depressing 70's, which was a reaction to the jolly 60's...etc etc and so on
>late 2000s >official WoW band consisting of Blizzard employees releases an in-game song that's literally a giant joke about raping women to some edgy metal
Modern devs would never. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdEYVy6BF0w
Same reason why every game is a sanitized piece of shit made for 40 year old dads. 80s Millennials, the biggest demographic were in their teens ewrly adulthood.

>>713706220 God this really showcases how bad they emasculated Warcraft.
>>713705468 what was depressing about the 70's? I just remember good ol' classic rock and comfy shows like dukes of hazard, three's company, sanford and son, and m*a*s*h.
ITT people born in 2010 pretend they know anything about anything
Edge in media was a trend that began with the success of Watchmen in the late 80's. Comics were stagnant and losing popularity and Watchmen did gangbusters. Rather than look at this and say "wow, comics can be really well-written self-contained stories with strong themes and symbolism and moral ambiguity and people actually like those things," comic execs said "WOW THIS IS DARK AND VIOLENT LETS DO THAT" And so they did.
What started as a trend in comics in the late 80's and early 90's (pic related) then expanded into a whole smorgasbord of "teen-targeted" media, with the prevailing thought being the best way to get boys to buy your shit was to add guns, blood, and titties.
>>713704739 (OP) it was nothing, people would post cartel execution video with chainsaws, faggots bleeding to death after a glass jar broke in their ass, and worse world in general was a lot less sanitized

>>713704739 (OP) the thing about 2000s edge is that i was corny as hell but genuine, they really thought they were being cool and because of that authenticity we did find it cool back then and now, 20+ years alter, it is endearing because of the hard contrast with the irony filled media of today

>>713704739 (OP) That was what society was like. School was full of people enjoying being rude and counter to everything. It was cool to be a celebrity and be "not like everybody else". >>713705318 >It was because of anime Sheltered weeb. Everything was because it was the golden age of capitalism, which is the idea that each individual deserves his own riches if he wants to work for it. Today is the opposite. Everything is opposed to capitalism now, so governments have tried to normalize speaking against it, and the MeToo movement has stigmatized the idea of the celebrity unless it's a woman of course.

>>713707226 >Edge in media was a trend that began with the success of Watchmen in the late 80's. Iโm entirely willing to believe this is Alan Moore himself, given what a massive god complex that hack has in thinking heโs the progenitor of everything modern pulp and โnerdyโ while constantly shitting on everything that came after (including many of his own works).

>>713704739 (OP) People that whine about "edge" are fucking faggots. yes we get it you're just so above it all in your gay little milquetoast life listening to tasteful Radiohead and vaping strawberry-onions tobacco while painting your nails some "ironic" color and calling everything "wild." A Very Mature Spin and Synthesis of whatever countercultures you themeparked so as not to make people TOO uncomfortable, you have it all figured out with a bunch of other posers propping you and each other up. Well played

>>713705120 TP dark link cutscenes were so weak. It felt like them trying to recapture the dark themes of Majoras Mask without realizing what made Majoras Mask actually work. MM was unintentionally dark as fuck, where TP they are trying to be, and it shows. I don't know how to properly explain it but anons who played them both will know what I'm talking about.
>>713704739 (OP) I miss 2000s edge cause it was sincere. You didnโt have someone break the fourth wall to tell you a character feeling angst or grief was some meta joke. Serious moments werenโt undercut with quips or irony poisoning, it was simplistically cool for the sake of it and it didnโt care what setting or character it applied to. You would never your Starkillers, Shadow 2006, Jak or the accompanying rock music to promote their trailers. Even stuff like Evancescence is making me realize how good we had it and I hated that song when I first heard it in Daredevil. We really need the pendulum to swing back to those days.

>>713704739 (OP) Jak 2/3 isn't the right choice for a picture. Even after Jak & Daxter, they were more humor than edge.
>>713714843 No its just trends change completely. Disco has not come back, westerns donโt exist anymore, romantic comedies or comedy movies period got turned into modern capeshit movies, pulp is completely fucking dead and so on. The newest trend is insincerity, the kind of self-aware, quirky jabs at a narrative or the audience. The kind of stuff you find in Forspoken, Veilguard or the average Marvel flick.

>>713713281 Jak's first spoken words are literally a threat that he was going to kill the main villain. Sure, they still had humor but the edge was right there from the start as soon as they open the time portal and monsters come flooding in. Tonally it's worlds apart from the original which starts off more like a kids' adventure movie and Samos' narration and Jak and Daxter having their little misadventure.

I respect Jak 2 for making me mad enough to want to finish it instead of ragequitting. Fighting a dying PS2 helped with the frustration of getting to a new area and the area wouldn't load properly, forcing me to redo the level all over again.
