I like how the Ratchet and Clank games did it. Lots of varied planets, if you wanna go to a different planet, just get in your ship and go there

It has two obvious pitfalls >Either the game doesn't have escalating difficulty because you have to assume each stage is done first
or >You DO make an intended order and anyone who picks the "wrong" stage first is just outright punished (Mega Man X)

I assume Levels means going continuously through levels with no way to go back, like Half-Life, while Stage Select gives you a menu of levels 1-50 and you can pick but you are still limited.

I like zones, personally. But looking at this image I think a three-act open world with the SECOND act being the densest, would be great.

Compared to open world, I think zones let a game do more with introducing varied locations. You can off-screen the transition and just go right to highly contrasting areas with it making sense. You get to put in shortcuts and secret paths too. Backtracking isn't as bad either. It's like a massive dungeon.

#1 - Levels >allows for natural story progression, gradual increases to difficulty and mechanical depth, etc.
#2 - Stage Select >allows for greater player freedom but usually has to sacrifice storytelling and difficulty scaling
#3 - Zones >levels but with dead ends and awful backtracking, hooray...
#4 - Open World (3 Acts) >level design, story, difficulty scaling, etc. all take massive hits, gameplay consists of running through barren empty fields with low enemy and mechanical variety. at least the 3 acts somewhat freshens things up over the course of the game
#5 - Open World >a shit.
