When you start upgrading your standards
If you don't give a shit about 1080p a 2060 could still be used to play every game out there on medium/high settings

far less than reddit and nvidia would have you believe.

It used to be something would come out that had an amazing graphical improvement that justified a newer card.

Now performance is poorer for marginal visual fidelity.
I last upgraded because darktide ran like shit on my 580. I don't see the need to upgrade for another 3 years unless i want to move up from 1080

Don't do this, I upgraded my PC for Cyberpunk 2077 and I didn't even beat it because a bug perma-softlocked my game and I lost interest by the time they released a patch. What a piece of shit that game is.

When the games you like keep getting gradual updates and eventually you cant run them at high/medium settings anymore.
I played Eve Online on a shit early 2010's gaming laptop for like 10 years until I finally bit the bullet and bought a new machine during covid when they were cheap.
Still using that machine, might just upgrade its gfx card in the next year or two and itll be good another 5 years

it's better to upgrade often because it spreads the cost. otherwise you end up like me and have to replace everything except the case

Well at that point your ability to judge what games will be good or at least worth giving a chance is likely very poor and you'll need to reflect on that.

worst Christmas ever
I spent all night playing the cart racer in Warcraft 3 at 10fps waiting for Christmas morning.
It would be another few months for me playing NWN at 2fps before I would get a newer motherboard.

Every new console gen but that doesn't really apply anymore with optimization varying wildly nowadays, shitty overpriced hardware, DLSS/FSR upscaling fuckery and goy tracing niggery.

Different versions of agp had different voltages required from motherboard and maybe something else besides speed.
My first gpu upgrade (from omnipresent gf440mx to gf6600gt) was fine without me even knowing about different agp slots.
