Animation cancelling by either jumping, other attacks, dodging or swapping to another character. For example, once she reaches a certain point of the animation when the swords spawn in the air, you can already use her skill and those swords will still hit the enemy so there's no need to wait through the whole animation. Same deal with swapping, the character you swapped from will continue sertain attacks while the one you're now controlling can do their own thing. Obviously, it's necessary to know which attacks can be followed up like that and which will just be cancelled completely. Perfect dodging also allows some characters to follow with the last hit of their combo, which is preferable to going through the whole string. THe character in the op needs to complete all of her attacks to gain full buffs for her transformation and if you just mash out her normal combo against an agressive enemy you'll get interrupted and take damage, so a better idea is to perfect dodge and get the finisher immediately to get the buff instead.

I think a good hack and slash needs to have interesting combos, different weapons, techniques or characters to choose from (so that the player can pick whatever style they prefer), and a balanced difficulty, so that the game is neither too easy nor too hard. It also needs a proper way to build and scale your character to meet the growing challenges and all.

And of course, it needs to have proper sensory appeal to the target audience (the visual and music style must match the audience it wishes to appeal to)

Everything else is just icing on the cake. It's why I like Dragon's Dogma so much. It's pretty basic and not at all rocket science, but it feels like your attacks have something behind them, and this encompasses a lot of elements. From the animation of both you and your opponent, to the visual effects, the way you and your enemy stagger before and after an attack, the differential delay between types of attack, the camera angle, and so on. There's a lot at play that goes largely unnoticed in great action combat, and entirely unutilized in many.
In regards to Enemy AI, that can be explained with one simple quote

Ah, yeah, the getting the 3 swords out and then use them by doing a plunge attack. If you're intro-ing, you already did the charged attack for sword #1. Then do the usual normal combo, but if you do it as a counter (dodge and attack), you'll skip a few animations for sword #2. Use skill for sword #3 and you'll be airborne, and then plunge attack to absorb the swords, then burst.

If you want to do it normally, it's slower, but this sequence is smoother if that make sense.

My Cartethyia is sadly without any ER, although her CR/CDMG is at 71%/265%? or so.
