Brother... the latency, contrast ratio, brightness and color of the Switch 2 display are more than enough for the vast majority of people. I'm not a Nintendo fanboy or whatever (only Nintendo console I've ever used is the Wii) but the reality of the situation is that if you were to ask the average person about the quality of the display they'd tell you it looks great. And they wouldn't be lying about it. Most people are not very sensitive to things like ghosting or little frame drops. Unless you have side by side comparisons they're not going to see the problem - because the problem is only really a problem for a minority of people.

As far as I'm concerned, Switch 2 panel is like an 8/10. I've seen it irl, a work colleague bought it day 1. Fulfills all my visual requirements, and it's 1080p 120hz with HDR and VRR. OLED would be better of course, but honestly OLED is more of a necessity for computers than consoles (as in, the display type is more impactful when browsing the internet, watching anime, reading manga than playing video games), though that's just my opinion.

There's no reason for them to though. The steam deck is obviously being bought by steam users. They're not expanding the audience with their expensive niche handheld PC. And there's no reason to think it was ever sold at a loss. The price was the same as you would pay for a laptop with similar specs at the time. Right now a laptop with the tech they would want is 650-700, that's what the steam deck 2 will be. Yes there is. The biggest reason they made the Deck was to push Proton and SteamOS. They want as many people using that as possible. It was never about the hardware itself, it was to spur on competition in the handheld PC space and then load up that competition with SteamOS. The Deck is just a vehicle for that and in order to be a good vehicle for that, it needs to be affordable, which Valve can easily do by subsidizing it with the shitload of money they make off Steam. "Never" is too strong of a word, but it will take a while. PS3 emulation is still kind of shitty, for example. I still think the Deck is a solid choice for primary console unless you are worried about experiencing FOMO with new Nintendo games. There's always the chance that the Switch 2 will go on sale down the road, and even if it doesn't, there will be enough units around to ensure cheap, second hand purchases.

To put in in perspective, I've waited so long to play a lot of third party stuff that I can pick up great games for under $10 and not have to worry about getting my money's worth. It pays to be patient, unless we're talking about online experiences.

I disagree with you about the last part. My 16" MBP has arguably the best MiniLED screen you can buy, with a little over 2500 zones and 2000 nits. HDR and local contrast still doesn't look as good as my glossy OLED 1440p monitor. Blue-greens and yellows are just impossible to get right with a polarizing layer between the light source and the viewer.

Out of all the broadcast standards, 120Hz can deliver everything except 50, whereas the other available RR can't do any.

VRR range is directly proportional to refresh rate. A higher RR gets a better VRR experience even if you're only using a fraction of the max FPS.

If you want to do BFI or "stride" frames (dropping 1 of X frames to reach a FPS higher than Hz/2), then the possibilities are even higher with a 120Hz display.

It's a good technical decision from Nintendo that allows devs a variety of target output FPS.

I have to laugh at the Deck comparisons. The Deck is stuck with a woeful upscaling solution and completely shit VRR. The OLED screen will look better displaying a static image, or a perfectly done 90 FPS game, which is rare as fuck for the Deck.

It's about 8:20 into the video. Listen for when he presses (the "click" sound) then notice how long it takes to respond. That was just ONE aspect of this video where it shows much more wrong than just input lag on menus, but I think it's mainly a problem when playing with others online rather than you playing alone or with CPU VS mode.

This is why very slow panels with awful pixel response times are not recommended.

The Switch 2's panel is incredibly slow, slower than any LCD monitor in many years including VAs - except it's slow with basically all the colors, not just black shifting.

This is the "thing" for me. I've got a few thousand $ PC that can play anything. Granted, I can't play it in bed or on the couch. But control schemes for most PC games assume a KBM setup anyway, so I'd have to fuck around with input settings and my experience with that is bad. I've never even thought of getting a Deck despite a huge Steam catalog.

But I love my SWOLED. Comfy as fuck, consistently quality games. It would be kind of weird to play TOTK on my PC without the gyro aim or the touchscreen. Yes, it costs more than the hardware within might suggest. But a few hundred dollars really isn't a problem for me.

They (PC/Switch) are just two equally good ways to play. I don't mond having both, but if you have a PC then I can't see a reason for the Deck at all.
