Is the Sword Coast/Faerun considered boring because its generic, or is it more that its setting is such a staple of the genre and so many other fantasy setting ape it that it becomes boring by association instead?

The latter, BG3 tried to change things up a bit by making the city early renaissance instead of a medieval city but it still falls flat and feels incredibly boring, coupled with the generic fantasy monsters.

>Comfiest
Cormyr is Knightlandia with a mild order of state police.
>Least Comfy
Thay as a non-mage.

I’m going off the assumption “comfy” does not mean “good” and is simply a quality of, “how happy am I living here?” And it’s still Cormyr, which was the focus of old-school books and is basically a Ren Fair.

The vast majority of fantasy settings are early modern, so Baldur’s feel isn’t that terrible. The moment you move out of feudalism and present intense urbanization is the moment it’s no longer medieval.

Possibly the most dogshit setting ever created, as for some reason this shit became the standard in everyone's fantasy
This world is literally more fucking dangerous than warhammer fantasy everywhere you go and yet entire kingdoms full of jobbers exist to be mulched into plot devices at the drop of a hat. The scale of carnage and the proximity to major city centers is absurd, the sword coast should be starving with the amount of desolation happening on the regular

Entire fucking dimensions can just pop in to a city, better hope the lvl 19 giga wizard cares enough because he is the only one who can do anything, this includes other dimensions and local divinity

Nah, Golarion is still worse as far as kitchen sink settings go, and PF 2.0 made it far more boring by gutting anything that WotC could conceivably sue over.

I'd argue that Golarion can never be great because, try as they may (and they have tried), they can never fully tie together the kitchensink setting they have created with a consistent theme. But I wouldn't call it the worst either, exactly because there are so many places inside that setting that allow you to tailor a campaign however you like.

Want gothic shit? Try Ustalav.
Want pirate/swashbucking shit? Try The Shackles
Want ancient Egypt shit? Try Osirion.
Want Asian shit? Try Tian Xia (for China) and Minkai (for Japan).
And the list goes on.

It's flexible for a DM that doesn't want the colossal work of homebrewing an entire region and its background.

To me it's boring because everything's already been done there and there's no progress. The plot evolved for 100 years by now and the setting is basically the same. I prefer systems where every edition feels different, like CP. 2013? Cyberpunk, but very light, like in TMNT. 2020? Full future. RED? Post-Apocalyptic. 2077? Sci-Fi.

I like how every Essos city described by George is like a mystical place full of wonder and something out of a mythology book, then when it’s reached that point it’s just Asians and Asian culture and the descriptions were untrustworthy peasant talk. Pick related is how artists depicted where Daenerys is right now before the actual thing was confirmed by George.

>Why do they hate spellcasters
Propaganda spewed by nobles and the royal family who all have their own court sorcerers. The idea being they took magic from the commoners and will quickly cut down anyone who practices it so they're the only people who control it. Means in the event of an actual revolution they're the only ones with magic and one mage is worth a thousand peasants with pitchforks.

Baldur is also one of the more technologically advanced societies, owing to the fact that other kingdoms use magic to get by and don't need to rely on technology. So in a war they have that edge as well.

Highly distinct with no overlap. Recycling features mostly sucks.
Even in games with pre-gen like Valheim or 7D2D, it's more interesting to see two radically different biomes next to each other which produces interesting features and even fauna interactions.

Yeah we got a lot of Fucking jealous Japs here in this Fucking thread! I mean no other setting has the lore or the worldbuilding that you will find here. There is a reason it was always the most popular BY FAR NOT EVEN FUCKING CLOSE campaign setting. And no matter how much Fucking haters and haterade you try to bring its way, there is nothing you can do to Fucking change that!

Well, I'll give the exception I liked best which was 90's PnP Planescape. I can't remember all the details correctly but it went like: Positive energy plane adjacent to Fire: Plasma
Negative energy plane adjacent to Water: Salt
Negative Energy plane adjacent to Earth: Dust

A bit of an exception, divorced from regular rules of biology and nature, but the ideas for cosmology became very interesting to me that way. I wanted to adapt it to Ravenloft better to where every element in the world was affected by Negative energy somehow. I think it is somewhat like this to begin with but maybe they've gotten away from it with the unpopularity of Planescape/dominance of FR. Too bad there was so much of this arrested development in world building it feels like due to one commercial reason or another.

DnD has been around for 50 years and 95% of the lore comes from Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate. Pretty much every point on this map has 0 lore behind it.

Tabletop RPGs should have gone the way of the dodo the millisecond video games were invented. The settings are cool but clearly shine far better in video game form. The mechanics are absolutely abysmal. Needing to roll 15 different dice 100 times just for a character to take a fucking step. Combat and situations that are supposed to be visceral and exciting boiled down to dice rolls and sterile mathematics. Talking in silly accents and acting like a complete theatre kid sperg at table with other theatre kid spergs. It's the most embarrassing thing in the world. Fundamentally there is no experience one could have with Vampire the Masquerade on the tabletop that would be as good as playing Bloodlines. Same is true for Forgotten Realms and BG2, Planescape with Torment, etc.

Just close in on Baldur's Gate until you see the border with Amn. That's about the farthest these games went. These games were quality over quantity. Well, until Act 3 of BG3 that is. Still, they cut off half the city map and Minthara pregnancy so they could release the game before the height of vacation season.

It's a mistake copied from Arena when a UI button would've covered Daggerfall in its proper position on the Iliac Bay (same as TES 2), so they moved Daggerfall out of the way to its now canon position.

BG1 takes place from Baldur's Gate, down to Candlekeep, and slightly south. Includes a scant few surrounding areas.
BG2 takes place further south in Athkatla, Amn, and the area surrounding it.
BG3 is back to Baldur's Gate and essentially a very small stretch along the river Chionthar.

Fair. I couldn't remember how far south we went in BG1 and how it relates to the general geography.
We hit up the forests of Tethyr and even the Underdark in BG2, but no reason to mention too much. I remember Saradush from ToB but not much around that.
