The way this whole thing has been pushed is so weird. The most people talking about it are Americans. Why didn't Ross get in contact with big European streamers and youtubers to push it? Those are the ones you need.
When you look at the percentages you can clearly see that the countries that are more fluent in English (North Europe especially) have a way higher engagement than the rest. Countries like Greece and Italy are still really low. Surely they've got some big vidya influencers that could be approached to push this?

reminder that ubisoft literally already changed plans and produced an offline mode for the crew 2 because they are afraid of this happening. People being able to play their old games is bad for them. Second, it's an attempt at controlling what you can and can't own as a creator.
Third, it doesn't affect games as a service, oddly enough those games that SHOULD be the target are completely exempt.

And finally, you should jaut be against it on principle since the person who wrote the FAQ doesn't know a lick about EU law and considers a licence separate from a "good" making it come off as very manipulative.

>stay free to play, but free to play players can't participate in microtransactions
>start requiring a โ‚ฌ1/month subscription if you want to participate in microtransactions
This way they can claim that microtransactions are an addon to their subscription service, thus they would still be treated as an actual service (like WoW) and would not be required to provide an end of life build/plan.
And free to play players are not entitled to a working game after it shuts down because no money has exchanged hands.

Simple, it's overstepping the boundaries of the government. And yes, it would be the first. Regulatory bodies like pegi, esrb, CERO whatever are one thing but they aren't forcibly changing a game or forcing you to give something up.
>they are just protecting the ownership the consumers have over shit they paid for
It doesn't affect consumer ownership in the slightest. You're just demanding that creators lose their control over their property which in this case would be over server software.
As much as someone is going to pull the old

1) it was alway their choice to do so
2) server software and the actual property are two different things where copyright is concerned.

There is a very good reason to be pro-killing games: property rights. Just because something is 100% pro consumer does not mean that something is good for society as a whole.

Companies giving away products for free would obviously be a 100% pro consumer move, but it wouldn't be sustainable and bring down society as a whole. Obviously, this is an absurdist example and not at all what SKG is about, but it's the illustrate the point that 100% pro consumer does not automatically mean good. SKG may be pro consumer, but it's bad for society as a whole.

Grow a pair. You're a programmer, your job is to solve problems. When a new graphics card came on the market, now programmers had to program shaders/rendering on that architecture as well.
Not only that, there's a concept in programming called interfaces, that I see can align nicely with this case. You make an interface for whatever third party service you want, and implement it twice: one for the actual middleware, and one for the custom/localhost one.

>networking isn't that difficult
It can be very tricky because the issue with networking isn't the data, but the timing. E.g. you need to coordinate across multiple machines across the world inside one simulated space.
But again, NOT MY PROBLEM. You figure it out programmer! Stop putting YOUR incompetency of programming upon my games!

I wasn't talking about Denuvo there, but about mandatory logins to validate your game ownership. In 1-20 years (yes, the range is that wide) it's likely that whatever login service a game uses will be shut down.
While it's mostly a problem on mobile games, there's plenty of PC games that also completely lock you out of the game unless you're logged in. Sometimes it's just a simple DRM check, but sometimes almost all the assets and even game logic is on some remote server.

That's fair. That's on me. My intention was to show that "pro-consumer" does not mean "good" but yes, I see in retrospect that it could be misconstrued as the "SKG demands free work from developers" strawman that I myself have been harshly condemning in these threads as intellectual dishonesty.

For the specific example of The Crew, if people can keep playing it indefinitely, they will be incentivized to not buy new games. This is bad the the economy as a whole. Planned obsolescence for digital goods is a necessary evil to maintain a healthy economy based on the consumption of digital goods.

Moving away from "ownership in perpetuity" toward "subscription/rental" is good in general, whether physical or digital. So "digital is different" may not actually be an important talking point at all.
