I think people who praise this game have something genuinely wrong with them. I realize that's really easy to say about anything but this game appeals to the specific kind of absolute fucking retard who looks at Mario running through a realistic field alongside some deer and says "HIRE THIS MAN!" without a hint of irony.
Sonic Team was clearly having an identity crisis with Sonic while this game was in development, not just in terms of game design but also narrative and aesthetic. Hopefully Shadow Generations' reception will help them get wise to what they should be doing.
