I played silent hill and I liked it very much and I pretty much never played survival horror games before
what are the others entries worth checking out? I heard the series is very devisive in that regard, I'd like to try downpour since I heard it does kinda its own thing even if it has flaws

If you want more survival horror just play Resident Evil, but stop before you get to 4 because every game after that is just a generic action shooter.
The remake of 2 is good if you care about a modern experience, but otherwise start with the originals.

Silent Hill was created by a team called Team Silent. They were responsible for Silent Hills 1, 2, 3 and 4 so at the very least you should play those, they're all cut from the same cloth. The rest would all be optional, but I'd recommend you try Shattered Memories as well, it's the most unique out of the western games. Downpour is... not great, and the hardest one to play nowadays (stuck on consoles, never got a port). Still, you've got a ton of good games ahead of you, so enjoy

Oh btw, which ending did you get? You might wanna go back and check the other endings depending on that, especially when it comes to a certain future title

you're not a real gamer if you don't play the bad entries in a franchise

Very nice.
I'm an oldass survival horror boomer who started with THE Resident Evil 1 back in the 90s, and SH1 instantly blew it out of the water.

Which ending did you get? Did you replay it yet?

>what are the others entries worth checking out?
All the OG team's classics: SH2, 3 and 4.
The OG versions of course. The DEmake 2 was utter feces, no sugar coating it.

You should obviously also give the OG, classic RE1-3, Dino Crisis 1-2 and Fatal Frame 1-3 a shot, if you like this play style.

>I'd like to try downpour since I heard it does kinda its own thing
No.
FUCK no!
That TRASH is THE absolutely worst piece of shit EVER to be released with the SH's title on the box. There's ZERO (0) redeeming aspects whatsoever. And I say this as someone who even gave SH Homecoming a second chance (it's still no good).

I completed the Kaufmann quest and got the good ending
I definitely plan to replay it again
thanks for the recs. sh1 is really a masterpiece and it's crazy how a 20+ year old title nails the sense of urgency especially in the sewers, I think tank controls just add more to the experience
definitely heard about fatal frame and I also want to play siren too
are there any other games you would recommend?

As long as you've seen either Good or Good+, you're golden.
In Good+, Cybil lives and you learn Cheryl wasn't Harry's biological daughter, him and his wife found her on the outskirts of Silent Hill during vacation and decided to adopt her
In Bad, you have a different final boss and Harry isn't given a baby, he escapes the nightmare alone
In Bad+, the entire game is a dream of a dying Harry as he bleeds out after the intro car crash
Other than Siren, you might want to try out Rule of Rose. And while completely different mechanically, Darkwood is one of the best survival horror games I've ever played

Play all of the silent hill games and resident evil ones so you can see how the series have evolved or devolved depending who you ask. Would add fatal frames, siren games, parasite eve 1&2 and first dino crisis for list of recommendations. Throw in The Suffering and Ghost Hunter on ps2 as a hidden gem for the hell of it

Very nice! Most people completely miss the Kauffman's side quest and thus get vastly different finale.
There's also tons of small details and other optional sections you may miss on the first few runs.

>it's crazy how a 20+ year old title nails the sense of urgency
26 years old now, actually.
And yeah, this is the sort of quality we old-ass vidya boomers got used to. I wholeheartedly stand on the sentiment that 1995-2005 was the Golden Age of all vidya.

On the flip side, all the shit the triple-A industry and especially Konami did to their best-selling franchises from 2006 onwards is unforgivable.

>are there any other games you would recommend?
Penumbra ep1 and 2
Afraid Of Monsters: Director's Cu
Cry Of Fear
Signalis
Resident Evil REmake (2002)

If you're into true retro, you could give the OG 1992 Alone In The Dark a shot.

And going off the traditional survival horror path:
Parasite Eve 1
STALKER trilogy (SoC, CS, CoP)
Condemned: Criminal Origins
Underhell: Chapter 1
System Shock 2

And BTW, this is not me : >>713919302
I would never spoil the endings (even with tags) nor push people to push on to the next game without replaying. Classic survival horror games are MADE to be re-experienced, over and over again; I've legit beaten SH1 some 40+ times by now, no joke.

Play every single one of them. This will get you ahead over 99% of the fandom.
Don't further engage with the fandom in any capacity if you want to maintain grey matter integrity however.

I actually never beat the first game because once I got to the final boss I realized I was on the bad ending path which makes the fight 100x harder, and I just kept dying instantly to the lightning attack. Some of those sections were pretty stressful, so I never felt like replaying the whole game over just so it was beatable.

Definitely play 2 and 3. After that, play as many as you can get your hands on. They're rarely great from this point on, but all are at least worth trying. Even Homecoming and Downpour are worth giving a chance, even if you end up dropping them.

>bad ending path which makes the fight 100x harder
No it doesn't. It's literally the very same thing mechanically, and easily dealt with. You can just run around in circles and never get hit. You also win the fight after a few short minutes if you have no ammo left.

The various unlockables + optional stuff make the replays quite fun.
