>>713965183I've mentally noted to myself when the "voice" of the writer behind the lines seems to change.
Like if I had to guess, Underrail's dialogue and descriptions are written by two different people:
-one is a normal guy who can't really into fluff but played a lot of Fallout/Arcanum and has a basic idea of how to structure things and occasionally has fun.
-The other is a gay man (likely closeted) who considers himself "low key" woke and believes himself a good writer.
That's why you can get sometimes even get whiplash characterization like that. It'll jump from funny banter and sci-fi lore building plots in the funky setting that is Underrail in one place to shoe-horned virtue preening completely out of setting the next.

Right now the game for me is quite boring, even on DOMINATING, because no matter what you get one build with one single routine and no real variety.

>>713978126lack of mobility makes it less good, but barrel stare is literally free damage.
consider escape artist, getting stuck can often be fatal. that would also enable grenadier and quick tinkering for maximum bullshittery. you already have some traps for some reason anyway. fast metabolism is ok even without psi, and yes you can just slap TM to any build and make it better if you want to.
>>713980578I think I'll just go tin can to survive, if I had one extra perk point I could pick grenadier but alas it's wasted on perception. Juggernaut is too good to pass with high con and at 7 str I might as well go for metal armors.
Is viable a Unarmed Explosives build? no grenade launcher, only throwables.
>>713982302Both are strong on their own already, so yes
>>713982302Throwing only is possible but you need to use throwing knives. Grenades have a cooldown so you can't rely on just them.
>>713982578>Grenades have a cooldownFUCK
>>713978891Shotgun is definitely doable at 12 perception with maxed out leading shot. A lot just comes down to preference. I also wouldn't be able to sit at 9 con without just getting 10 for thick skull. Personally I would've dropped int and given up power management and gun nut. 6 would still be enough for armor sloping. But again, it's all preference. If you haven't had a problem with grenade cooldown so far then grenadier isn't a big deal. How much you need to do to mitigate the movement penalty of heavy armor going forward is also preference. I've only ever played on dominating, so I have strong preferences for the things I've personally relied on.
>>713982715Get the feat that reduces this and couple it with temporal manipulation

>>714006715Monks actually thrive against the natives. They have the highest mobility with 4 AP attacks plus Fancy Footwork, and do amazing damage against anything without high Mechanical threshold. I'd easily kill a few natives in a single round then dash away with the tons of extra movement.

>>713967662damage grenades have 2 turn cooldown, but there's a lot of other things to throw, but that's not that bad of a restriction. Grenade -> limited temporal increment -> end turn -> grenade is a lot of front loaded damage. throwing knives are pretty shit at the start but they actually scale with your skill unlike other throwing implements so they so they start to pick up, and fatal throw is very strong.
and everything is just designed to buy you a thousand turns. throwing nets buy you more turns, putting CALTROPS everywhere is one of the most busted things in the game, EMP grenades start to become really useful. Shock shurikens are a non-scaling form of throwing knives that start really good and have some extra utility. And there's no reason not to invest heavily into poisons, and all the extra turn-buying and LTI use chains into traps with Quick Tinkering very easily
oh, and gas grenades, and acid vials, and putting poisons on traps/caltrops/throwing knives is all a huge extra source of damage.
I went to 10 con just because the build can afford to do it. I have thick skull, I have loads of HP, metal boots/sure step to run across my own caltrops, respirator to run through my own gas clouds, antithermic overcoat to run through my own incendiary grenades. the whole kit comes together as being extremely forgiving. throwing only is a very very good build, with only a couple of blindspots that you mostly find in the expedition expansion
>>714010283expensive to operate, high AP cost with nothing synergizing quite right or unique going for it. the high AP cost means one-turn wonder mowdowns won't happen vs. multiple enemies, but it doesn't have any control to make up for it. pellets get eaten by damage threshold enemies and it'll turn into a lot of pounding every single thing with expensive w2c shells and it's not like SMG's that can use expose weakness or 5mm shock rounds
>>714003551and here I am bringing the jackhammer everywhere like a FUCKING RETARD
I did a shotgun build and it wasn't so bad, you just gotta use the red shells only unless its an armorless creature like rathounds then the yellow shells work better. I also had grenades and thumper for crowd control, I ended up killing the final boss in just 3 shots without doing the mutagen puzzle or destroying the healing tanks.

>>714014848people like this game because it isn't bogged down by romance, just (You), the pipes and the caves
>>714009876>>714012248Shotties aren't bad. The perk to ignore evasion is broken, you can play somewhat low PER, tanky and still hit agile enemies on dominating. It turns into a satisfying positioning minigame, you can often kill targets next to the guy you shot at. I never used any w2c shells, reds and yellows all the way.
>one-turn wonder mowdownsNot everything can be firearm pistols, maybe you should try playing firearm pistols.
I can't even make supersteel, I don't have enough charons. this build suuuuucks
I'm still mad about the psi nerf, especially for pure psi builds I can no longer use everything at my disposal and can only use 6 abilities at as time.

Can I still get enough magic to buff myself or would I have to look up metagame shit to make that work?

>>714015805yep, u got filtered
>>714015805I did. They're decent enough as an entire package, but both Wasteland 2 and Wasteland 3 have god awful and absolutely braindead combat, which is a problem compounded further by how much of it there is and how limited the options for character development are. What you're doing at hour 10 is exactly what you'll be doing at hour 30.

So, for monk builds, Gloves are better early and Unarmed is better late, right?
>>714017457Well the unfinished game is just fun for me, that's all.
>>714017852Leather gloves and completely unarmed are two separate builds.
>>714017852You'll need something like the power fist for the robots in Expedition.
>>714018094rusting acid traps
>>714004509Don't worry she'll kiss it better
>>714017852To some degree yes. You can make insanely strong gloves midgame if you're pumping crafting stats and do Foundry early. And you can hit 4 AP attacks with Leather Gloves at 17 DEX, which is possible with the Improved Dexterity feat or temporary boosts.
But nothing really competes with Improved + Expert Unarmed damage especially since you can pump STR due to only needing 12 DEX to reach 4 AP attacks. And STR is a multiplicative damage amp on true unarmed unlike weapons where it's additive.
>>714017852unarmed it trash from start to finish compared to gloves.
With enough crafting you can get some massive damage going if you use super steel fiber to up the quality of your leathers. Or just combine two super steel plates of the highest quality for some insane heavy gloves.
>>713994553crafting isn't mandatory but it's always very very good. some builds can skip it a lot more than others but it's hard to resist the temptation.
just having crafting skill isn't good enough most of the time (chemistry excluded), you have to find materials of high enough quality

>>713964530Classic would be better if the curve were dropped 20~30%
In Oddity you basically have to turn Deep Caverns upside down in order to reach level cap, even if you did a majority of the overworld quests/oddities.
In Classic, you can reach level cap without even trying. On my most recent playthrough I tried to avoid leveling past 25 until I hit DC, and I had enough xp queued to get 30 before I even stepped foot in the institute.
>>714025215I'd make a mod that does that if it weren't for styg being such a cunt about people modding his game
>>714025215Yeah I feel the same, oddity was neat to try once just for the novelty but I don't want to go dumpster diving and exploring every inch of ever map in the game to level up every time I play, I also don't like the Protectorate or Free Drones so I never do their quests which hinders oddity XP progress but helps keep me from overleveling on classic.

>>714027591That's because all the game has is combat and character building. The story is shit.
>>714027537no, I respect that. like, I LIKE the oddity xp curve I just dont' want to do the tedious routing for the oddities on repeat. the way it really pushes you to plot out your skill points in just the right levels of stealth/pickpocket/lockpicking etc. just so you can snag oddities and it is a pain. But the slower xp curve is cool
>>714027648Story is pretty tertiary for a game like this. As long as the setting and dialogue is interesting enough to quickly click through it is enough to carry the game in the writing department. The last thing I felt the game needed is a more forced narrative.

things I wish were in UnderRail:
-Drivable Quad bikes (kinda like the jetskis) that make the map larger because you race through the rail tunnels with them
-procedurally generated lower cavern layouts
-you can fire your gun at anything, just to make sound or to attempt to detonate a mine
-most zone transitions eliminated

-more mystery dungeons
-joinable Ironheads and Lunatic factions

-A reason to use more than one or two weapons types. Though I understand this is very difficult to achieve in an RPG without feeling like shit. (I love the idea of using a pistol, a grenade launcher, a shotgun as needed like in a shooter, but there's no reason to do so in an RPG)
-rocket launchers
-high tech rifles not just pistols (laser, acid, electric, etc)

>>714036867never knew about this weapon existence.
This was was a real bitch all because I didn't have a feat that I didn't need for anything else in the game. (expose weakness)
>>714036014- Temporal Manipulation is bonkers and pairs with basically every single non-psi build since its main benefits are all utility focused, especially Contraction (a second improved adrenaline shot on a separate cooldown) and Increment (reduce cooldown of everything). You can just leave WIL 3, only level up the bare minimum of the skill in order to meet spell learning requirements and it'll still be good, though if you're going knives or swords you'll probably get 5 WIL for Ripper anyways. Pure psi users meanwhile might not necessarily pick Temporal Manipulation due to spells costs, limited spell slots and cross-school penalty.
- Thought Control is CC god if your build has enough points to spare for 10 WIL in order to get Locus of Control. Damage wise it's a bit boring since all you'll be doing is mind bonk, and you'll need something else for robots.
- Psychokinesis and Metathermics are more damage focused and generally you want to go all in on WIL to kill shit quicker. Exception being high DEX unarmed builds with Psychokinesis using Force Emission.
Usually you don't want to slot more than two schools, since every slotted school after the first one increases psi costs by 10%. You also want INT for spell slots, usually at least 6 for Premeditation feat (one AP free spell cast), possibly 8 for Psycho-Neural Flexibility if you're going with two or more schools. Crafting is insanely useful for psi-focused builds since you can craft tac vests and headgear that reduces spell costs.
>>713988101just do the Jamrock Shuffle and you'll be fine
Where does the player character come from, anyway?
I know they're a southerner but they really show up at SGS with no skills and Tanner is just like "yeah s/he's in"?

>>714037358Neat, thans for the rundown
I'll consider going for TM in a knife build
>>714037458The faaaaar South.
I make up a different backstory dependent on the build
>Barefist gigachadCave survivalist. Parents died extremely young trying to get somewhere with him. Doesn't even remember his own name. Ended up being named something reminiscent of Carnifex by people who witnessed him killing with just his hands. Picked it up because he may as well have. Joined SGS for a safe place to sleep.
>PsionA miracle child born on an island in the waterways to a woman everyone thought was a witch. Really, she was a TM and TC Biocorp psientist who taught him a bunch of different shit she knew. His father was some passing PK and MT mad lad almost lunatic who thought she was some goddess he had to "honor." She disappeared to answer the call all psions are compelled to and left him drifting the waterways meeting a bunch of weird ass people. Eventually ended up in SGS and became the most powerful psion in existence.
>Genius Fusion Cannon TincanJunkyard native. Loved tinkering junk and shooting shit with his ma and pa. They died in a plague and Junkyard is a shithole, so he decided to join up with SGS.
>>713964426 (OP)Are the DLC narratively incorporated into the base game story?
I want to try and finish the base game first, then maybe buy the DLC later, but i dont wanna do that if the DLC is baked into the middle of the first game's story because then I'll probably have to replay the game after finishing it the first time.
>>714039064nope

>>714039210This was my Hemopsychosis build, which was another fun one.
>>714039552Why do this anyway? I never got the appeal of hemopsychosis
>>714040174Because you cast with the health given by Last Stand, you can change your Psi slots on the fly and use whatever you want (don't even need an inhaler). It's effectively free damage against enemies. Even if you don't use it for that, Psychosis builds tend to drink up Psi Points like Dude and his brews, so it's nice to use it on a turn that have a low amount and your booster is on cooldown.
>>714040174Helps conserve psi points and reserves and only takes an advanced health hypo to recover the health used.
>>714039552perfect example of how psi builds are GODMEN tier and firearm pistols is rathound droppings
>>714039064The Expedition works fairly stand-alone but there's a nice tie-in where you can present special items you found in The Expedition and an NPC will give you some hints about what they really are. It's really deep lore stuff only
>>714037458>Where does the player character come from, anyway?IIRC you get to "tell" your backstory in a paragraph somewhere in the game and AFAIK the only consistent theme is "far south". Although it's open ended if you're making stuff up or not, Player's choice, really.
>>714037358>Temporal Manipulation is bonkersit is and you forgot to mention Stasis, which has the utility to extend even single-turn buffs like Bullet Time to last two turns. With just Adrenaline Shot and 10 AP turn carryover, a non-TM user can have 85 AP (not including any rapid reloader proc) to use with Bullet Time buff. With TM fully used, it's 185 AP, and feats can push that even farther.
>>714037334I'll never understand why a build that can use expose weakness doesn't take expose weakness. It's such a gimme. You could have been expose weakness -> tele punch deleting all game
>>714035143Yeah I'd recommend that for your first run so you can see/access more stuff. Just keep in mind the most you'll need is ~120 or so in each, and you can get like +35 bonus to each from an Oculus item (among other items).
>>714035143yeah but you only need like 90 effective skill in either of them, ever, for 95% of things (including lockpick/hacking tool bonuses)
>>714043171My tele punches were already doing that without the feat with the proxy besides the few exceptions like those bulky flamethrower bots and the service bots from the DLC.
>>714043634yeah, exactly, it OHKOs those bots.
>>713965325welcome to the underrail kid
>normal is easy but comfy once get you into the game
>dominating is just unfunny stat bloat but has the stuff like better enemy's AI and abilities
imagine if Styg added custom difficulty setting
>>714044613I'd probably just need HP tuned down a bit and maybe sell % upped slightly from the "base" dominating experience
>>714044613Get gud, scrub
>>714044613there's nothing BS about dominating other than the precision bloat negating the value of dodge/evasion
the extra enemies, higher levels, 30% more HP/stats, etc. all just help equalize the world against the power of the PC
>>714045725Is dominating easier if you tincan?
>>714045931Actually it's probably the opposite. I find that if you're a typical tincan, you're just instant food for anything that doesn't deal primarily mechanical damage or has armor-piercing tools, uses crippling strike, etc. Which is a hell of a lot of stuff actually.
>>714045931>>714046068It depends.
I find the most survivable builds are high con and mobile ones. Tincans are pretty great until you get up against certain enemies, like the aforementioned crippling strike ass faggots
>>714045931example Normal build:
Got MAD in his attributes + Metal armor + has Sprint + chugs health stims after taking damage + is okay with spending a bunch of action points to reach an enemy and assault rifle burst although it exposes him for a lot of damage taken
example Dominating build:
Lifting Belt 5% + conditioning 15% + ancient rathound 10% + aegis 15% + morphine 50% = 95% DR with low armor penalty, inherently mobile, plays to minimize taking damage and optimized to crumple everything with a sledgehammer in a few turns.
>>714044613Anon there is a difficulty between normal and dominating.
>>714046703Like, both high con and mobility in one build?
>>714047583Most metal armor builds just run 6 AGI so you can take Sprint (MP gain unaffected by armor load).
>>714047583Yes.
I did this with the previous version of my above spear woman. The thing is I sacrificed power for survivability I didn't really take advantage of. Now, I win by overwhelming firepower and mobility with 5 con
>>714048187>>714048039Interesting, I will try and play around with this for a bit and see what takes
Thanks anond
>>714048337Another "mobile tin can" is armor sloping+2 with super steel. IIRC can get it under 25% armor penalty.

>>714054332Isn't that mostly present in Hexago. I guess Coretech has some heavy cyberpunk theming, but otherwise the setting is relatively low tech, the age of corps having passed.

>>714054478>but otherwise the setting is relatively low techWith computer hacking, fusion batteries, stealth generators, force fields, mech suits and power armor, energy weapons, and the like, right? The South Underrail is kind of a wild west since the big companies that founded it fell apart but everywhere else is a cyberpunk dystopia.
>>714054627My PC, a spear and riotshieldman is named Brian
It's literally him
>>714056124>spear and riotshieldmanbut that's just a meme
>>714054791>but everywhere else is a cyberpunk dystopiaI hope not. Much of the appeal of Underrail is its setting and atmosphere, the decay, the ruins, the underground living and relatively primitive lifestyle coupled with the juxtaposition of extremely rich tech stuff is fun, especially seen with Expedition. Having the rest of the Underrail just be cyberpunk would be a disservice to the setting as a whole.
>>714056896The average city up north is like Core City. The South is way underdeveloped, there's a reason protectorate guys all think everyone down south are hicks.
>>714056968Which is what makes things fun and fascinating. Bring on the misery, bring on the poverty. Give me Junkyard x100
>>714057095South being a shithole is also better from a game perspective. The north doesn't have bandits and wildlife and lunatics and cannibals and so on everywhere. You can't explore and find enemies or abandoned bases or things like that because there aren't any. It's a better place to live but it's a worse setting for a game.
>>714057303>It's a better place to liveI'd rather live in SGS than big places like Core City or the Foundry. The smaller settlements in the south are downright comfy. Fuck the north, and fuck the protectorate. THE SOUTH SHALL RISE AGAIN.
A game in the north would only work if it was some company or city management game or something.
>>714057459Yeah, dominating!!
>>714057303>>714057490This. North doesn't even have mutants, it's so sterile up there it seems. Everyone speaks all fancy, there's no bloodsports either? North Underrail should be the Akavir of the Underrail universe. We hear, but we never see.
A game in Hexagon could probably work, even though its up north Seeger says it isn't under Protectorate rule and that its a pretty dangerous place to live at with there being cyborg muggers and shit.
