It's called the Memory Dive. The idea is a weekly challenge that runs through three randomized dungeon segments and their boss scaled to the level cap so you get all your normal abilities. Modifiers are placed on the dungeon to change gameplay, both in the players favor and against them.
Modifiers could include things like setting default mana regen to 0, making enemy attacks deal all damage in the form of a stacking DoT, cutting player cast time in half, Chaining players together so they can't move too far from one another, ect.
Rewards for the first weekly clear would be a currency used to a shop that changes inventory weekly, selecting randomly from a pool made of non-progress gear. It could be minions, mounts, furniture items, glamour gear, emotes, ect. Make sure the pool includes gear from holiday events for that slim chance to get old holiday items the player either missed or wasn't around for.
Making rewards not tied to character progress means that not being able to complete one week wouldn't set you back at all, but the changing pool of rewards means there's still a driving force to get players to engage with the content in the long term. The changing dungeon bosses and modifiers also promote repeatability, keeping the content from getting stale.

I think you're right, but I'm not resubbing until they take seriously the feedback and put someone who knows how to write back in charge of the MSQ. I can't feel investment to the game without that core foundation which was the story.
I only did Eureka and BA because I wanted to know every little piece of Krile lore and complete her story.
If It wasn't for that I wouldn't have done it, same with a lot of other side content if it's connected to the MSQ I did it or the MSQ characters.
Another example was Blue mage I thought it was going to have some connection to Tural so I levelled up my Blue before DT during EW drought, and it was locked away in the fisher quest line.
I did Criterion Aloalo because Banri Oda recommended doing that in preparation for Dawntrail, I did all 12 routes just to get all the lore and it was interesting, I did it with my brother we played it together and it was fun, but without the recommendation and motivation of the MSQ I wouldn't have done it.
I don't do 'content' for 'content' sake, FFXIV gameplay isn't that interesting on it's own, there are other games I can and do play that are better from a gameplay stand point, what kept me in FFXIV was the emotional narrative investment because of the story.
Dawntrail broke that and it hasn't won me back not even remotely yet, I want a reason to resub so far the game hasn't given it to me.

It's bad, and the worst MSQ in XIV, but it's not the worst story ever told as some would try to sell it. The actual content is a step up from the previous expansion, but that's because the previous expansion had dogshit content.
The story didn't have any teeth, no real conflicts or turbulence that felt genuine, and the new region it introduced felt sterilized because of it. Characters were mischaracterized because they were used as props to try and hype up the new NPC who spends too much time with the player making it seem like they're meant to be the center of everything. This would be less of an issue if the NPC were at least likeable, but because CBU3 was scared of giving her any real flaws, trials, or issues, she's incredibly unlikable.

Exactly the issue. With prior stuff they did just did “what we think is cool from the culture”, so Ishgard had French names, Othard was a mix of China and Mongolia, Thavnair was Persia/India. Dev pinching is only part of the issue.
Yoshi is a man of no backbone and is very susceptible to ego stroking.
The continuous development has always tried to appease people and was willing to change to accommodate them. What the game needed after HW/SB was somebody who would do things for the good of the game.
Universal accessories had a purpose, locking them affected gear/gearing significantly.
Accuracy had a purpose, removing it made the gear/gearing and the stat situation worse overall.
TP had a purpose, it made fight design and combat overall (particularly AoE) worse.
Debuffs (the infamous piercing meta) ha da purpose, but an overreaction made the job design and party compositions worse overall.

Sure, people bemoaned them but just blanket removing these things did more harm than good in the longrun because of short sightedness and a need to appease people because his ego couldn't take it. There were ways to fix the issue without destroying the concept.

The game just doesn't have an MMORPG feeling for some reason. I think it's the constant teleporting around which makes the world feel small. The useless zones which are just staging areas for the MSQ and don't feel alive or immersive. The duty finder which means people just stand in Limsa or whatever and it transports you straight to a dungeon. The fact that you never need to speak to anyone besides "Hello" at the start of a trial/dungeon/raid.

Honestly, I don't know how you can look at a game like GW2 and not realise it's superior in pretty much every way. And it doesn't even require a sub fee

For me it was how the game world is set up, if you want to travel to a different area, loading screen, if you want to travel to a different area within the same city, loading screen, if you want to go to the inn? The big point for me is questing in this game is absolute dogshit and completely solo player focused.
The MSQ is a solo experience outside of dungeons and trials there is nothing shared, you can't even do yellow quests with your friends.
