The dialogue being good however doesn't save the narrative drop off in act 3. Dialogue is a vehicle to explore characterization and influence character action and understanding of what's going on. The people of Lumiere being sidelined for the Dessendre plot means most of what we learn about Lune and Sciel feels like it was all a waste. My biggest complaint about E33 is that it’s not balanced at all. You can become gamebreakingly OP just by equipping a bunch of damage Pictos.

The final boss is also a let down, because despite the actual spectacle and music of the fight being pure kino, it’s balanced assuming that you’ve done no side content, so you can easily one shot them.

I think it varies. The SNES ones aren’t movie-game like at all aside from maybe VI. The PS1 games upped the movie-like elements, but they all still had plenty of gameplay to balance it out. I think FFXIII is one of the few you could genuinely call a “proto-movie game”.

Yes but this only becomes apparent in the last third of the game. The majority of it is spent fighting for a population that is believed to be real. Realistically the player isnt just going to go by what is best for Maelle based on escapism, they are going to take into account the relationships they built with Gustave, Lune, Sciel, and their legacy. So the comparison is absolutely warranted
